Baysox Battle Past New Britain

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - The Bowie Baysox defeated the New Britain Rock Cats 4-3 Friday night, keeping pace as the Eastern League playoff race eseems poised to come down to the season's final days. The 70-62 Baysox remain a game and a half behind the Harrisburg Senators for second place and the final playoff spot with 10 games left in the season

The game continued the trend of close match-ups between Bowie and New Britain, with five games decided by two runs or fewer in the season series, which the Baysox now lead 5-1.

Left-handed pitcher Pedro Viola's first win as a starter continues to elude him, though he performed well enough to keep victory within reach with three runs on five hits, one walk and two hit batters through 6.0 innings.

The Baysox were forced to battle back after the home team grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Rock Cats second baseman Steve Singleton hit his 40th double of the year to right field with two outs and Evan Bigley followed him with another double to right field that plated Singleton for the opening run. Outfielder Mark Dolenc capped off the two-out rally with a single up the middle of the diamond that scored Bigley from second base.

Eastern League All-Star Ryan Adams answered Singleton's two-bagger with one of his own in the top of the third inning, extending his Baysox single-season record and league-leading total to 42 doubles. Left fielder Tyler Henson, who doubled in the first inning, hit a two-out single to right field to bring Adams across the plate as Bowie cut the Rock Cats' lead to 2-1.

Manager Brad Komminsk shuffled the Baysox lineup in the fourth inning. After recording his first multi-hit game since Aug. 13, Henson was substituted out of the game second baseman Carlos Rojas, who sent Adams to third base as Brandon Waring shifted to first base and first baseman Joe Mahoney replaced Henson in left field.

The Rock Cats restored their two-run lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, which Dolenc opened with a double to left-center field. Catcher Tobias Streich pushed Dolenc to third base with a sacrifice bunt and with two outs, Estarlin De Los Santos plated Dolenc with an infield single to third base for a 3-1 lead.

Adams started the top of the sixth inning with a single to center field and moved to second base as Rojas grounded out. He took third base on a wild pitch by New Britain starter Tyler Robertson. With two outs, Mahoney swung for strike three, but the ball slipped past Streich and careened into the backstop, sending Adams across the plate while Mahoney raced to first and safely beat the throw. Mahoney continued to press his luck and stole second base before scoring the tying run on Waring's double to left field.

Right-hander Sean Gleason replaced Viola to begin the bottom of the seventh inning and retired the side in order with a pair of strikeouts. He was handed an opportunity to win in the top of the eighth inning, when the Baysox took their first lead of the game. Adams led off with an infield single to third base, his third hit of the game, and advanced to second on Portes' throwing error.

Just as they did the previous night, the Rock Cats gave up the go-ahead run on an error. Mahoney's ground ball slipped past De Los Santos at shortstop for a two base-error as Adams scored to take a 4-3 lead, Bowie's first of the game.

The Baysox loaded the bases on three walks with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, but were unable to score an insurance run as Rojas grounded into a force out and Adams was thrown out at second base.

Missouri-native lefty Chad Thall took the hill in the bottom of the ninth inning and notched two strikeouts and walked a batter before he handed the ball to right-hander Brandon Cooney. Cooney induced a ground out to end the game, giving the Baysox consecutive wins for the first time since Aug. 6.

The Baysox play two more games in New Britain, starting Saturday at 7:05 p.m., then return to Bowie for their final home stand of the regular season, with four games against the division-leading Altoona Curve beginning Monday, Aug. 30, at 7:05 p.m. The Baysox final regular-season home game is Thursday, Sept. 2, and features the Festa d'Italia Beer Dinner, with an Italian-themed buffet-style meal in the Diamond View Restaurant with a generous selection of beers.
