New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

The Fisher Cats had their chances, but couldn't overcome the Sea Dogs in a 5-1 decision Friday in front of 5,992 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. New Hampshire's offense, highlighted by Adeiny Hechavarria's 2-for-4 performance, left 14 men on base in defeat.

The loss, combined with the Reading Phillies victory over the Binghamton Mets, keeps the playoff magic number at one. A single New Hampshire victory or a lone Reading loss, from this point on, would clinch second place in the Eastern Division for the Fisher Cats, who sit just 1.5 games behind the Trenton Thunder for the division lead.

The Sea Dogs (62-69) got on the scoreboard in the top of the second to take the early 1-0 advantage. Chih-Hsien Chiang walked, moved over to third on a Juan Carlos Linares double into the leftfield corner and came around to score on an infield putout.

The Fisher Cats (75-56) tied the game at one apiece in the bottom of the fifth when Darin Mastroianni ripped a triple to right field and was plated by Hechavarria's RBI single. This series of events lifted Portland starter Alex Wilson after allowing the one run on three hits, while striking out eight and walking four.

Mitch Herold (3-4) came in as relief for Portland to record the victory. The lefty hurler threw 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit while whiffing four and walking one.

New Hampshire starter B.J. LaMura (5-6) kept the Fisher Cats in the ballgame through the first five-plus innings. Despite walking the bases loaded in the top of the first, LaMura settled down before handing the ball over after walking the first two batters of the sixth inning.

Reliever Vince Bongiovanni allowed both inherited runners to score when he gave up a three-run home run to Ryan Lavarnway in the top of the sixth to hand Portland the 4-1 lead and close the line on LaMura.

LaMura was charged with three runs on two hits while striking out five and walking six in the losing effort. He kept Portland to a 0 for 4 clip with runners in scoring position to keep the game within striking distance.

The Sea Dogs added a run in the top of the ninth on a Chiang solo-shot, his 11th of the season.

The homestand continues on Saturday with the third of four games scheduled against the Portland Sea Dogs at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. Kyle Drabek (14-9), who was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Year, will take the mound for New Hampshire, and be opposed by Portland right-hander Blake Maxwell (5-0). Fisher Cats Pre Game begins at 6:45 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman.

It is Earthtec Go Green Night at the ballpark on Saturday. An Atlas Fireworks Show follows the game. Fans will also be playing USA Baseball Bingo. Playoff tickets and 2011 Season Tickets are now available. Visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005 for details.
