Reyes Caps Comeback in Brooklyn's 2-1 Win

BROOKLYN, NY - July 2, 2015 -The Cyclones won in come-from-behind fashion on Thursday evening, downing the Hudson Valley Renegades by the score of 2-1. Alfredo Reyes had a two-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh that proved to be the game winner.

Cyclones starter Gaby Almonte and Renegades hurler Yonny Chirinos locked up in a pitcher's duel on Coney Island Thursday night, matching zeroes through the first four innings, but in the top of the fifth the Renegades finally broke through.

Angel Moreno started the top of the fifth with a double down the left field line to instantly put a runner in scoring position for the Renegades. Nic Wilson followed with a well struck single to left field that put runners on the corners with nobody out. Josh Rapacz was next up, and Almonte was able to induce a 6-6-3 double play, but Moreno trotted home with the game's first run.

That is how the game would stay until the bottom of the seventh when Brooklyn was finally able to break through against the Renegades bullpen. David Thompson started the threat with an opposite field single and Jeff Diehl lined a single up the middle to put two men aboard with nobody out. Enmanuel Zabala was next up, and the Cyclones centerfielder dropped down a perfectly placed bunt that eluded Renegades pitcher Michael Velasquez to load the bases with nobody out. Zach Mathieu pinch hit for Pedro Perez and had an 11-pitch battle before eventually striking out for the first out of the inning. SS Alfredo Reyes, who came into the game 3-for-37 on the season, connected on his second hit of the game - this one a well struck ball into the right centerfield gap that chased home two runners and gave Brooklyn a 2-1 advantage. On the play, Reyes made contact on the base paths with Zabala between first and second as he waited to see if Renegades centerfielder Angel Moreno would make the catch, and was called out. But the damage was done and Brooklyn took their first lead of the game.

After the Renegades escaped further damage, the game would be delayed by 27 minutes as a brief weather system made its way through Coney Island. When play resumed, Alex Palsha came out of the bullpen for the Cyclones and tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth to close out Brooklyn's victory and collect his third save of the season. Christian Montgomery (1-0) got the win after tossing a scoreless seventh inning.

The Cyclones will look to complete the three-game sweep tomorrow evening at Dutchess Stadium with Nicco Blank making the spot-start for the Cyclones as Michael Gibbons will be promoted to Binghamton (AA) and make a start for the B-Mets. Brooklyn will return home on Saturday evening to open a three-game series with the Williamsport Crosscutters featuring a post-game Independence Day Fireworks extravaganza.
