Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - The Connecticut Tigers scored early and often, plating a run in the first and six in the second while the Lowell Spinners managed just three hits, losing for consecutive times for the first time in 2015 by a 11-2 final Thursday night at LeLacheur Park in front of a crowd of 3,457.
Connecticut (7-6) jumped on the Spinners right from the start on a two-out home run from Tigers first round draft pick Christin Stewart in the top of the first inning to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers poured it on in the second inning after a leadoff walk got the inning started. A contentious call at third put runners on the corners and an RBI single extended the lead to two. A grand slam by Cam Gibson gave the Tigers a 6-0 lead and a Brett Pirtle triple chased Spinners' starter Jake Cosart from the game. Pirtle came around to score to push the lead to 7-0 before Taylor Nunez escaped the inning.
The onslaught continued in the fourth with another Pirtle triple driving in a pair. Pirtle came around to score on a single by Josh Lester and the Tigers lead was 10-0.
After the Tigers added a run in the seventh, it appeared the Spinners would go down without a fight, but with two outs in the ninth inning a walk to Tucker Tubbs was followed by a 400-foot home run by Mitch Gunsolus for what would would be an 11-2 final.
Cosart (0-1, 9.72) struggled, finishing the night allowing seven runs on four hits and a pair of walks, striking out three. Nunez was charged with three runs, two earned, on five hits over 3.2 innings, striking out three. Matt Kent was touched for a run over three innings, striking out four, while Danny Zandona pitched a scoreless ninth.
Lowell (10-4) managed just three hits on the night, including Gunsolus's first professional home run. Luis Alexander Basabe and Chad De La Guerra had the remaining hits as the 6-9 batters in the Lowell line-up combined to go 0-for-16 on the night.
The Spinners look to salvage a win from the three-game set when the series returns to Norwich Friday night. Jose Almonte (2-0, 2.25) gets the ball for a 7pm first pitch.
