Vermont Scores Nine Unanswered Runs For 9-2 Win At Tri-City
July 2, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
TROY, NY --- Seth Brown had a bases loaded triple in a four-run fourth inning, while first-round pick Richie Martin went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI in his professional debut to lead the Vermont Lake Monsters to a 9-2 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at Bruno Stadium.
Much like Wednesday night when Vermont took an early 2-0 lead before Tri-City eight straight runs for an 8-2 ValleyCats victory, the Lake Monsters turned the tables on Thursday by scoring nine consecutive runs after Tri-City took an early 2-0 advantage. The first four runs came in the fourth as Martin singled with one out for his first pro hit and later scored in the inning when Brown launched a triple to rightcenter with the bases full. Brown scored one out later on a wild pitch for a 4-2 Lake Monsters lead.
Martin gave Vermont a 5-2 lead in the fifth with an RBI single, then the Lake Monsters put the game out of reach with four more runs in the ninth inning. Chris Iriart plated the first two with a two-run double and Ryan Howell added an RBI single later in the inning for the 9-2 lead.
Martin, Brown, second-rounder Mikey White and Jesus Lopez each had two hits for Vermont, while Evan Manarino (1-0) allowed one run over two innings to earn the victory in relief of starter Heath Bowers (one run allowed in his two innings of work). After the Lake Monsters took a 5-2 lead in the fifth, Corey Miller took over for Manarino and scattered five hits over four scoreless innings.
Tri-City starter Austin Nicely (0-1) retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced before being giving up the four runs in the fourth inning to take the loss. Johnny Sewald was 3-for-4 with both runs scored for the ValleyCats (6-8).
Vermont (5-8) will wrap up the three-game series at Tri-City on Friday beginning at 6:30 pm before heading to Connecticut for a three-game series against the Tigers. The Lake Monsters return to historic Centennial Field on Wednesday to start a six-game homestand against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers and West Virginia Black Bears.
