Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
Brooklyn, NY (7/2/15)- The Hudson Valley Renegades fell to the Brooklyn Cyclones 2-1 on Thursday evening at MCU Park. Hudson Valley drops to 6-7 on the season while Brooklyn improves to 9-4.
Neither team scored a run through the first four innings as both starting pitchers, Yonny Chirinos for Hudson Valley and Gaby Almonte for Brooklyn, were dominant. Both pitchers allowed just two hits each through the first four innings of play. The Renegades scored the game's run in the top of the fifth inning as center fielder Angel Moreno doubled to lead off the inning, moved to third base on a single by Nic Wilson and scored when catcher Josh Rapacz grounded into a double play.
Chirinos saw his night come to a close after tossing five shut out innings and gave up three hits while striking out one. Brooklyn scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as with one out and the bases loaded, shortstop Alfredo Reyes hit a two-run single to give the Cyclones a 2-1 lead.
Rain halted the action on the field for 27 minutes before play resumed in the top of the eighth inning. Brooklyn's closer Alex Palsha retired the last six batters to pick up his third save of the season to give Brooklyn the 2-1 win.
Christian Montgomery (1-0) took the win in relief for Brooklyn, pitching a scoreless frame. Michael Velasquez (1-1) took the loss for the Renegades as he gave up two runs in two innings in relief of Chirinos. Almonte gave up a run in six innings in his start Brooklyn, striking out seven batters as well.
Notes: The Renegades fell on the road for just the second time in the 2015 season as they are now 5-2 when playing away from Dutchess Stadium. But the 'Gades have been strong away from home, outscoring their opposition by a total of 41-18 in those seven games.
Hudson Valley and Brooklyn return to Dutchess Stadium on Friday, July 3 for the finale of the three-game series, with first pitch set for 7:05pm. Friday evening is "Civil War Night" presented by Hudson Heritage Federal Credit Union. Fans will also be able to enjoy a postgame fireworks show after the conclusion of Friday night's game.
