Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics, have announced that pitcher Tyson Ross has been activated from the disabled list. Today's roster move increases the Cougars' roster to the Midwest League maximum of 25 active players. Ross, who was drafted by the A's in the second round of the June draft (58th overall), is scheduled to start the resumption of a July 7 game that was suspended in Cedar Rapids due to rain. The continuation of that game begins at 4 p.m. this afternoon and will be the first time that Ross has toed the Elfstrom Stadium rubber in game action.
Ross was placed on the disabled list July 1 with a right shoulder injury, retroactive to June 29. The 6-foot-6 righty has only pitched in two games this season for the Cougars, and both appearances occurred during a June road trip. In five innings of work, Ross struck out five and allowed one earned run.
During his three-year collegiate career at the University of California, Ross struck out 271 batters, good for third on the Golden Bears' all-time list. As a sophomore in 2007, Ross received the Rawlings Gold Glove Award as the nation's top fielding collegiate pitcher. Prior to his time at California, Ross was part of the USA Junior National Team in 2004 and 2005.
With both Ross and fellow pitcher Scott Mitchinson (activated yesterday) now cleared for game action, this marks the first time that no Cougars pitcher has been on the disabled list since June 30. During last night's 9-2 loss against Wisconsin, Mitchinson pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief in his first outing since June 23.
The Cougars (22-28) returned home late last night from Wisconsin and open an eight-game, seven-day homestand that starts this afternoon at 4 p.m. CDT against the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Following this afternoon's continuation of a rain-suspended contest, the clubs will play a seven-inning game.
