Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, IL - Scott Hodsdon and Lance Sewell handled the mound work, and Greg Dowling and Todd Johnson each homered as the Kane County Cougars defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 5-1, Wednesday night in front of 5,539 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. The Cougars started an eight-game home stand and rebounded from a 7-6 loss earlier in the day in the completion of a rain-suspended game from July.

Hodsdon pitched four innings of one-hit shutout ball with one walk and three strikeouts. Coming back from a pectoral injury, he worked one more inning than his previous game and continued to increase his pitch allotment. Sewell (5-7) gave up one run in three innings and fanned four to pick up the victory.

The Cougars took a 3-0 lead in the second inning against Esmerlin Jimenez (5-7), as Justin Frash scored on a wild pitch and Matt Ray squeezed home a run and eventually scored on a Petey Paramore grounder. Then Dowling smashed a two-out homer -- his 12th -- in the fourth, and Johnson sent one out -- his 11th -- in lead-off form in the sixth to account for the 5-1 final.

The Cougars (23-29) and Kernels (29-23) continue their series Thursday night at 6:30 CT when Jamie Richmond (7-9, 4.48) faces Trevor Reckling (9-5, 3.04).
