Kernels hold on for 8-5 win over Burlington

August 12, 2008 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels jumped to a 7-2 early lead and then held off a Burlington rally in the late innings for an 8-5 win over the Bees on Tuesday night in Burlington. The win gives the Kernels a series split and they are now just 2 games behind the Bees in the MWL West second half standings.

Jeremy Moore and Gabe Jacobo paced the Kernel offense, as Moore was 2-4 with a double and 2 run HR and Jacobo was 2-4 with a double and 3 RBI. Julio Perez was 2-5 with 2 RBI and Jay Brossman was 2-4 with an RBI as the Kernels had 11 hits.

Kernels starter Michael Davitt (6-7) allowed two run on five hits and struck out six over seven innings for the win. Reliever Eddie McKiernan worked out of an eighth inning jam and pitched the final 1.1 innings to earn his 18th save of the season.

Burlington starter Danny Gutierrez (4-3) was tagged with the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits with six walks and five strikeouts over four innings. Clint Robinson was 3-5, Jamar Walton was 2-5 with an RBI and Johnny Giavotella hit a solo HR in the fifth inning.

The Kernels now head to Kane County and will make up the suspended game from July 7 before playing the scheduled game, shorted to 7 innings. Cedar Rapids returns to Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, August 16 to open a four game series with the Beloit Snappers.
