Resilient Fighting Saints Defeat Capitols
November 6, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
MADISON, Wis. - After Charlie Gerard netted a goal with 12 seconds left in regulation time, the game came down to one faceoff in the Dubuque defensive end. The Fighting Saints controlled that draw and hung on to defeat the Madison Capitols 4-3 on Friday night, ending a six-game road trip with five wins.
Trey Dodd bashed home a rebound off of a Shane Kavanagh shot at the side of the net to put Dubuque up 3-1 in the third. It would take a Casey Johnson response goal, his first in the USHL, following Guillaume Leclerc's goal 16 seconds prior, to pick up the victory on this night.
Johnson pounced on a puck after a huge scramble in the slot, ripping a wrister through the traffic and into the net to put Dubuque up 4-2 at that point.
A top line that had been tremendously productive over the course of this season-long six-game road trip kept the mojo going in the second period. Mitchell Smith directed a shot from twin brother Evan Smith in the high slot, pushing it through Capitols starter Ryan Edquist.
Madison struck first, as Sam McCormick took a feed from Leclerc, who had a two-point night for the Capitols, and redirected the pass through Saints starter Hunter Miska after plenty of territorial domination by the visitors halfway through the first.
As it has been all season long, and even later in this game, each call has had a response. Gordie Green set up Dallas Gerads in the high slot for a top-shelf shot that tied the game at 1 apiece three minutes after Madison tallied.
The Caps outshot the Fighting Saints 34-32 for the game, and in every period except the third.
The power play continued to struggle, going 0-for-3 on the night. The penalty kill, however, returned with a vengeance, denying all four opportunities for Madison.
Miska won his sixth straight start, denying 31 of 34 shots from the Capitols on this night. He continues to lead the USHL with eight wins.
Dubuque returns home for the first time since October 17 when they host the Chicago Steel for Chicago Blackhawks night on Saturday, November 7. Blackhawks mascot Tommy Hawk will take part in the night's promotions. Tickets are available by calling the box office at 563.583.6880, or by going online to DubuqueFightingSaints.com. Saturday's game is the USHL Game of the Week on FASTHockey, free, and in HD, on FASTHockey.com.
