Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH - The Youngstown Phantoms fell to the Green Bay Gamblers Friday night at the Covelli Centre by a final score of 2-1. After taking a lead into the first intermission, a power play and shorthanded goal by the Gamblers in the second period was enough to seal the win for Green Bay.
"Our special teams let us down tonight, bottom line. You can't give up a power play and shorthanded goal and win many games," said Phantoms Head Coach John Wroblewski.
Neither team had many chances in the first period, until Alex Esposito forced a turnover in the final minute. Esposito was able to spring Lukas Craggs down the left wing, and Craggs' wrist shot beat Gamblers goalie Adam Huska with just 27 seconds left in the period.
Youngstown carried play early in the second period, until a series of questionable no-calls culminated in Phantoms Captain Matt Alvaro hurting his shoulder after being boarded in the neutral zone. Kevin Conley had seen enough and decided to fight Grant Fredric, who had hit Alvaro moments earlier. Conley was given an extra penalty for instigating, and Gamblers' winger Marc Michaelis scored his first career USHL goal on the power play. Then at the end of the second frame, Green Bay was able to score a shorthanded goal after the Phantoms defense had a communication breakdown.
"We have to do a better job of getting through that adversity, no question about it. We had a chance for a big momentum swing if we kill that penalty off, a chance to show what we're made of as a team, and it didn't happen," Wroblewski said.
Goalie Colin DeAugustine made a few huge saves to keep the Phantoms' deficit at one, but Youngstown was unable to find an equalizer in the final period.
The Phantoms will face the Gamblers again on Sunday at the Covelli Centre. Puck drop is set for 5 p.m. It will be Youngstown's first Sunday Family Funday game of the year, where tickets and food vouchers are offered in a discount bundle. It will also be the Pirates and Princesses game, where Captain Jack Sparrow and Elsa and Anna from the Disney movie Frozen will be at the Covelli Centre to watch Phantoms hockey.
