Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Sioux Falls, SD-There was plenty of pink inside the PREMIER Center Friday night for the Pink in the Rink Night, but the Waterloo Black Hawks ruined the party by downing the Herd 4-1 before a large crowd of 8,517 fans at the PREMIER Center. The crowd was the second largest of the season for the Stampede who fell to 6-6-0 on the year and lost back-to-back home games for the first time this season. Jack Suter provided the only goal for the Herd while Stefanos Lekkas stopped 24 shots in goal. The pink ice didn't slow down the Hawks (5-5-1) who led 2-0 after one period and never looked back.
The Stampede struggled to get any momentum going in the first period and the Black Hawks would take advantage as Brandon Shultz found the back of the net just 3:52 into the game. Liam Pecararo took the puck behind the Stampede net and sent a perfect pass onto the stick of Schultz who one-timed a shot past Stampede goaltender Stefanos Lekkas. Waterloo controlled much of the play in the rest of the first period, but the Stampede were able to hold them off until the final minute of the period when the Black Hawks struck again. Ronie Hein took the puck behind the net and sent a pass into the left circle where Marshall Moise sent the puck over the right shoulder of Lekkas and into the back of the net to make it a 2-0 game after one period. Waterloo outshot the Herd 11-6 in the period.
The Herd knew they needed to get off to a better start in the second period and get back into the game and they would do just that just 1:10 into the second period when Jack Suter tallied his second goal of the season. Joe Rutkowski sent a pass up the right wing wall to Suter who broke across the Waterloo line and cut inside the right circle before lifting the puck over the right shoulder of Waterloo goaltender Cale Morris to make it a 2-1 game. The Stampede held most of the momentum for the next five minutes, but it would be Waterloo taking advantage of a Stampede breakdown to make it a 3-1 game. With the Stampede putting on more pressure, the Hawks intercepted a pass and Brandon Schultz broke across the Stampede line with Yuri Terao who sent a pass into the right circle for Ben Newhouse who wristed a shot through the five hole of Lekkas and regained their two goal advantage. Sioux Falls played well for the remainder of the second period, outshooting the Hawks 14-11 in the period, but still found themselves in a 3-1 deficit heading into the third and final period.
Sioux Falls continued to apply pressure in the third period and outshot the Hawks 9-6, but couldn't get anything past Cale Morris who stopped 28 of 29 shots on the night. The Herd pulled Lekkas in the final two minutes for an extra attacker and created some scoring chances, but Marshall Moise scored into the empty net in front of his own bench to seal the game at 4-1. Sioux Falls outshot the Black Hawks 29-28 on the night and went 0-for-5 on the power play while Waterloo finished 0-for-4.
The Stampede will look to earn two points on the weekend when they travel down I-29 to Sioux City on Saturday to face the Musketeers at 7:05 PM. Fans can watch the game live on FASTHockey or listen live on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 107.9-FM and online at KELO.COM starting at 6:40 PM. Sioux Falls returns home next Friday and Saturday to host Omaha and Tri-City at the PREMIER Center.
