Reno Aces Game Notes vs. OKC Dogers

August 5, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release

Today's Game: Neftali Feliz gets the nod in game two of the four-game set. The Aces are winners of eight of their last nine and just six games back of first-place Fresno. Reno is 3-1 in August and 16-6 since the All-Star break. Neftali Feliz went 4-1 in July and led the Aces pitching staff in wins.

Last Game: The Aces took game one from the Oklahoma City Dodgers by a score of 5-2. Ildemaro Vargas led the way with a 2-for-5 two-RBI performance and extended his hit streak to 30 games. Jake Buchanan tossed a gem. The right-hander went 7.2 IP, allowed five hits, no earned runs and struck out four. The win improved Reno to a record of 58-54, four games over .500 for the first time in 2018.

Streaking: Ildemaro Vargas has hit in 30 consecutive games, good for the longest hit streak in the Pacific Coast League and tie for the second longest in the PCL in the last 10 seasons. During the streak, he is batting .375, (50-for-133), with 21 runs scored, 11 doubles, 13 RBI and an OBP of .428. There have only been five players in Aces history with streaks of 20+ games. Jake Elmore (31, 2012), Ildemaro Vargas (30, 2018), Tony Abreu (24, 2011), Chris Owings (23, 2013), and Ketel Marte (22, 2017). In 2017, Ketel Marte went 37-for-98, .378, with nine 2B, three 3B, one HR and 16 RBI from April 29 through May 22.

Streaking Extended: Vargas' 30-game hit streak ties the longest in the Pacific Coast League since Alex Dickerson (ELP) did so in 2016. Since 2009, only two players in the PCL have recorded hit streaks of 30 or more. Jake Elmore (Reno) has the longest with 31 set in 2012 and Anderson Hernandez (OKC) had 30 in 2011. Joe DiMaggio, then an 18-year old outfielder with the San Francisco Seals, established a new Pacific Coast League record by hitting in 61 consecutive games in 1933.

Dynamic Duo: Jake Buchanan and Neftali Feliz have anchored the Aces post-All-Star break playoff push. Together, the duo has combined to go 8-1 since July 1. There are only two other players in the Pacific Coast League with four wins since July first, both play for the El Paso Chihuahuas. Jerry Keel is 4-1 and Brett Kennedy is 4-0.

Historic Call: On this date in 1921, Pittsburgh's radio station KDKA provided its listeners with the first-ever broadcast of a major league game. Harold Arlin, detailed the action in the Pirates' 8-5 victory over the Phillies at Forbes Field, becomes baseball's first play-by-play announcer.

Sellout: Last night, Greater Nevada Field hosted their 51st ever sellout. The Aces have had six total sellouts in 2018. Prior to last night, their last came on July 21 vs. Las Vegas.

Once Friends, Now Foes:When the Aces head to Las Vegas next week they will likely meet former long-time Aces, Zach Borenstein and Jack Reinheimer. Reinheimer played in 311 games in an Aces uniform, third-most all-time. Borenstein appeared in 280 games for the Biggest Little City, one slot behind Reinheimer for fourth-most all-time. Following the away series in Las Vegas, Reno will host division rival Sacramento. Cesar Puello will be in the outfield for the River Cats after signing a Minor League Free Agent contract on August 3rd, 2018. Puello was released by the Arizona Diamondbacks on August first following 73 games where he hit .317 with six home runs and 33 RBI.

Looking for Blood: In conjunction with United Blood Services, the Aces are hosting their second annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive at Greater Nevada Field. On August, 15th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., all donors can receive Aces swag and save lives in the process.
