Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (42-70) propelled themselves past the Las Vegas 51s (55-58) behind three long balls and an offense that notched seven hits in a 9-4 win, Sunday at Principal Park.
Starters Duane Underwood Jr. and Cody Martin held the offenses scoreless through three innings. The I-Cubs finally broke the seal in the bottom of the fourth, as Jason Vosler lofted his Chicago farmhand-leading 18th home run on the season for a 1-0 ballgame.
Underwood Jr. continued to pound the zone, allowing just two base runners and one hit through four frames.
Las Vegas quickly responded with a three-run fifth off a solo shot from Dominic Smith, and later took the lead, 3-1, off a Ty Kelly two-run double.
Iowa answered back three outs later, as Mark Zagunis rocked a two-out, three-run home to cap off a 2-for-3 day with two walks, two runs and three RBI. Las Vegas evened the scales with a run in the seventh to balance the game at 4-4, before Vosler roped the fifth run of the game with his second RBI and career high-tying fourth hit.
Chris Gimenez soon put the game out of reach, as three walks loaded the bases and set the stage for the catcher to launch Iowa's first grand slam of the season and his first long ball of 2018. It was his third career grand slam through 15 professional seasons.
Underwood Jr. wrapped up his day throwing 5.0 innings, surrendering three earned runs on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts, before Anthony Bass made a one-inning hitless major league rehab appearance. Brad Markey (W, 3-2), Dakota Mekkes and Dillon Maples rounded out the bullpen effort, which gave up just two hits and a home run over 4.0 innings.
The I-Cubs and 51s will play the third game of a four-game set tomorrow at 7:08 for Dog Days. Fans can enjoy dollar hot dogs and a pre-game puppy parade. For more information or tickets visit www.iowacubs.com.
