Reimer's First Professional Shutout Leads Rays Over Checkers 4-0
March 15, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Charlotte, NC - James Reimer stopped all 25 shots he faced and Matt Scherer had a pair of goals to help lead the South Carolina Stingrays to a 4-0 victory over the Charlotte Checkers at the Time Warner Cable Arena.
"[Reimer] didn't face many shots in the first period or so," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "But he really impressed me in the third period coming up with some timely saves."
The first period was another scoreless 20:00 minutes between the Stingrays and the Checkers, but it was not without intrigue. Not only was there a fight between Spencer Carbery and Lee Falardeau, but there was a disallowed on the power play for Charlotte. With four seconds to go on their second power play of the period, Ryan Hillier found the back of the net, but not before Michele Leveille backed into goalie James Reimer prompting a goaltender interference call and keeping it a scoreless game going into the second period.
The second period was the antithesis of the first. At the 10:03 mark of the period, Josh Godfrey was able to get his fifth goal of the year. The goal came on the power play and was assisted by Travis Morin and Maxime Lacroix. The goal snapped a streak of 104:19 of play between these two teams without a goal being scored. The Rays were not done, however, and struck again at 15:39 on Lacroix's 28th goal of the year. The goal was assisted by Morin and Keith Johnson, and came off a great pass from behind the net by Johnson. With time about to expire in the period, Matt Scherer brought the puck in the zone and fired a shot from the top of the slot. The shot tipped off the glove of goalie Jeff Jakaitis and trickled into the net making it a 3-0 game. The goal, Scherer's ninth of the year, was assisted by Lacroix and came at the 19:55 mark of the period.
The third period felt much more like the first than the second as neither team could get on the board until the final minute of play. At 19:25, the Stingrays had a three on two odd man rush going into the offensive zone. Scherer ended up with the puck on his stick and fired it by Jakaitis for his second goal of the game, his 10th of the year. The goal was assisted by Carbery and Pierre-Luc O'Brien and made the score 4-0, the eventual final.
The winning goaltender was Reimer who stopped all 25 shots he faced en route to his first professional shutout. The losing goaltender was Jakaitis who stopped 36 of the 40 shots he faced. The Rays went 1-6 on the power play while killing off four short handed situations they faced.
