Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A third period comeback fell just short as the Utah Grizzlies held on for a 4-3 victory over the Bakersfield Brontos in front of 5,444 fans at Rabobank Arena Saturday night.
Neither the Brontos (27-30-7, 61pts) nor the Grizzlies could light the lamp in the opening stanza, with just 17 combined shots in the frame. Bakersfield managed 11 shots on goal against G Robert Gherson, while G Yutaka Fukufuji saw six shots in the period by Utah (24-23-16, 64pts).
Utah C Peder Skinner broke the scoreless tie just 1:27 into the second period, but Bakersfield came back with one of their own midway through the frame. On the power play, F Dave Bonk slipped the puck in front of the net to RW Mike Wirll, who slapped the puck off the post and in to tie it at 1-1. The Grizzlies came back to regain the lead with a goal by D Tim Maxwell at 17:25 to take the lead into the second intermission.
The Grizzlies stayed one step ahead of the Brontos in the third. F Mark Pavli scored just one minute into the final frame to push the lead to 3-1. Bakersfield twice pulled within a goal in the final frame but could not net the elusive tying tally. C Dave Bonk scored his 25th of the season at 3:57, only be be answered by a F Tom May goal at 10:58. F Andrew Ianiero followed up his hat trick last night with another tally tonight, hitting the 20-goal plateau at 14:09. That made the score 4-3, and there it would stay.
