Ontario Reign News Release
VICTORIA, BC, Canada - The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL Los Angeles Kings and AHL Manchester Monarchs, was defeated by the Victoria Salmon Kings Sunday afternoon in front of 5,547 fans at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
It took 23:37 for the first puck to find the back of the net in the match. Victoria left wing Scott Howe picked up the rebound from center Adam Taylor's bid and lifted it past Ontario goaltender Jeff Zatkoff. Right wing Wes Goldie registered the secondary assist, and the Salmon Kings were on the board with a 1-0 lead.
While on a power play less than four minutes later, right wing Jon Rheault tipped in center Tim Kraus' shot from the point to tie up the game. Defenseman David Walker notched the secondary assist on the play, and the teams headed into the third period tied with one goal each.
The score remained tied until 15:53 in the final period of play. Salmon Kings right wing Brady Leavold threw a shot on goal that was saved by Zatkoff. The rebound came back out to his stick and Leavold slid the puck into the net. Defenseman Matt Kelly and center Chris St. Jacques notched the assists, and Victoria took a 2-1 lead with just over four minutes left to play. With 42 seconds remaining, Ontario pulled Zatkoff for the extra attacker. The Salmon Kings capitalized on the empty net and their power play with one second remaining in the third. Adam Taylor tossed the puck into the untended goal off assists from Matt Kelly and netminder Julien Ellis. Victoria won the match with a final score of Salmon Kings 3, Reign 1.
Three stars:
1. VIC - B. Leavold
2. ONT - J. Zatkoff
3. VIC - T. Wedderburn
Notes:
- Tim Kraus extended his assist streak to 4 games (5a) (3/11/09-3/15/09)
