TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: The Ontario Reign and San Jose Barracuda square off for the third time in five days after meeting last Friday and Saturday in San Jose. It will be the third of eight total meetings this season, the first of four in Ontario at Toyota Arena.
LAST TIME OUT: The Barracuda defeated the Reign on Saturday night 4-2 after Ontario defeated San Jose the night before 6-1. Taylor Ward made the game interesting scoring a six-on-four power-play goal with Pheonix Copley on the bench making it a 3-2 deficit with 3:53 to play in regulation. Just 63 seconds later Pavol Regenda put the Barracuda back on time 4-2. San Jose led 2-0 after the first period getting a four-on-four tally from Jack Thompson and a short-handed score from Zack Ostapchuk. Martin Chromiak found the back of the net midway through the second period for the lone tally in the frame.
BETWEEN TWO PIPES: For Ontario, Pheonix Copley suffered the loss on Saturday allowing four goals on 26 shots just two nights removed from surrendering six goals on 24 shots in a 6-2 defeat at Henderson. He recorded 24 saves on 26 shots in his season debut back on Oct. 24 in a 5-2 win at Abbotsford. Erik Portillo has started six of the first nine games and has allowed two or fewer goals in each of his last five starts making 114 saves on 123 shots (.927%) and made a season high 36 saves Friday in a 6-1 win at San Jose. For San Jose, Gabriel Carriere picked up his first win of the season on Saturday making 27 saves on 29 shots, a night removed from a relief appearance allowing two goals on six shots in 27:20. Jakub Skarek was yanked from the crease Friday surrendering four goals on 17 shots in 32:38. The Barracuda have alternated between Carriere and Skarek through their first eight games.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: For the Reign, Taylor Ward has a goal/point in four of his last five games with eight points (5-3-8) while putting up 18 shots. Glenn Gawdin has an assist in back-to-back games and at least one point in five of his last six contests with six points (1-5-6). He is one point shy of 100 in his Ontario career. Andre Lee has a point in four of his last five games with five points (2-3-5). For the Barracuda, Colin White has a three-game point streak (1-2-3) after tallying an assist in both games vs. Ontario last week.
BURROUGHS BOLSTERS THE BLUELINE: Veteran defenseman Kyle Burroughs was placed on waivers Sunday, cleared yesterday, and was loaned to Ontario from LA. The 30-year-old brings significant NHL and AHL experience to a young Ontario defensive core which has an average age of 23.38 excluding Burroughs. Of the nine defensemen on the Reign blue line, Burroughs joins Joe Hicketts and Samuel Bolduc as the only two skaters with over 100 professional games played in North America. The Vancouver, BC native tallied three assists last season in 33 games for the Kings and has played parts of five seasons in the NHL appearing in 201 games collecting 22 points (5-17-22) splitting time with LA, San Jose, Vancouver, and Colorado. He signed a three-year contract with San Jose on Jul. 1, 2023 and played 73 games with the Sharks during the 2023-24 campaign notching eight points (2-6-8) before being traded to LA on Jun. 7, 2024 in exchange for Carl Grudnstrom. Originally drafted by the New York Islanders in the 2013 NHL Draft, seventh round, 196th overall, he spent parts of six seasons with their AHL in Bridgeport where he served as team captain during the 2019-20 season. Burroughs has played parts of seven seasons in the AHL recording 86 points (18-64-86) in 324 games with 431 penalty minutes.
COLLECTIVE EFFORT: The Reign do not have anyone in the top 30 in scoring in the American Hockey League as Taylor Ward leads the club with five goals and eight points in nine games. However, 15 of 22 players who have appeared in at least one game this season have scored a goal while 21 have collected a point.
MR. 500: Veteran forward Jacob Doty is sitting on 499 career professional games. The 12th year pro made his pro debut with the ECHL's Alaska Aces during the 2014-15 season playing 49 games recording 11 points (3-8-11) while skating in 14 games with the AHL's Chicago Wolves tallying six points (2-4-6). He has played parts of 10 seasons in the AHL including seven with the Reign and has collectively appeared in 265 games registering 43 points (19G, 24A) with 574 penalty minutes. The 32-year-old spent parts of four seasons in the ECHL skating in 159 games accumulating 36 points (13G, 23A) with 335 penalty minutes. He played parts of two seasons in the EIHL from 2017-19 with Braehead and Nottingham.
BACK HOME + END OF ROAD TRIP: It's been 16 days since Ontario has played at Toyota Arena after playing five straight on the road where they posted a 3-2-0 record. The Reign will play two of their three games this week on home ice before heading back out on the road for three more games next week.
OFFENSE VS. DEFENSE: Ontario is seventh in the AHL averaging 3.44 goals for per game having scored three or more goals in six of nine games including a season high six last Friday in a 6-1 win at San Jose. The Barracuda have allowed the fourth most goals in the league and sit and rank 32nd with a goals-against average of 4.13. Through eight games they've allowed six goals on four separate occasions and their -8 goal differential in the second period is the worst in the league having allowed a league high 17 goals in the middle frame. The Reign are 14th in the AHL averaging 2.89 goals-against per game having held their opposition to two or fewer goals in six of nine games while San Jose is averaging 2.63 goals for per contest, 23rd in the league.
