September 3, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Oklahoma City Comets News Release
The Oklahoma City RedHawks walked off with a 4-3, ten inning win over the New Orleans Zephyrs Thursday evening at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. Casey Benjamin scored with one out in the tenth on a single by Travis Metcalf to send the RedHawks on the road with a win.
New Orleans took an early lead against Luis Mendoza and Oklahoma City. John Raynor tripled to leadoff the game and scored on a sacrifice fly by David Matranga.
The RedHawks tied the game in the second inning when Max Ramirez hit the first pitch he saw from Zephyrs starter Hayden Penn to the left field bleachers to tie the game at one. It was the fifth home run of the season for Ramirez, four of which have occurred at home.
Mendoza and Penn matched scoreless innings over the next few frames until the Zephyrs tacked on a pair in the top of the seventh inning. Jai Miller singled to leadoff the inning and scored on a triple by Lee Mitchell, who later extended the New Orleans lead to 3-1.
Oklahoma City tied the game in the home half of the eighth. Jared Bolden walked to reach base for the first time in his Triple-A debut and advanced to third on a single by Greg Golson and an error charged to Miller in center field. Benjamin brought home Bolden with a sacrifice fly to left center. Golson stole second with Royce Huffman at the plate and moved to third on a base hit during that same at bat. Ramirez hit a high fly ball to left field which was deep enough to score Golson on a sacrifice fly.
Benjamin walked to start the bottom of the tenth and advanced to second a sacrifice bunt by Huffman. With one out and first base open, New Orleans opted to walk Ramirez to step up a potential inning ending double play with Metcalf at the plate. Metcalf grounded a 2-2 pitch off shortstop Gookie Dawkins' glove and the ball rolled into shallow center field which allowed Benjamin to score the winning run from second.
Mendoza pitched six and two thirds, surrendering three runs on seven hits and Penn allowed just one run on three hits over six innings. Josh Rupe (5-7) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to notch the win, while Chris Mobley (3-3) was charged with the loss. At one point late in the game, the RedHawks A.J. Murray and Rupe combined to retire eight consecutive batters.
Matcalf had the lone two-hit game for Oklahoma City and two different New Orleans player had multi-hit games. The RedHawks victory clinched a winning record against the Zephyrs this season and improved Oklahoma City's extra inning record to 13-4. The RedHawks finished the home portion of the 2009 schedule with a 41-31 mark, one home win more than they finished the 2008 Amercian Conference Championship season with.
Oklahoma City travels to Memphis to close out the 2009 campaign over the weekend. The RedHawks and Redbirds play four games in five days with a doubleheader slated for Saturday. The series opener on Friday will feature starters Kris Benson and Lance Lynn for Oklahoma City and Memphis, respectively, with a 7:05 first pitch slated at AutoZone Park.
