TONIGHT: The RedHawks conclude their home schedule with the fourth and final game of this series against the New Orleans Zephyrs. OKC leads the series 2-1 and the season series 8-7, but New Orleans shut out the RedHawks 3-0 last night. Last night's result snapped the RedHawks' 6-game winning streak head-to-head against the Zephyrs. Righthander Luis Mendoza is slated to start for OKC, his first start and second appearance of the year against the Z's. He allowed 4 runs on 4 hits in a relief outing June 12 at Zephyr Field (no decision). . Righthander Hayden Penn is due to start for New Orleans. Penn allowed 3 runs in 6 innings in a loss to the RedHawks July 22.
SHUTOUTS ARE POPULAR: One night after OKC shut out New Orleans 3-0, the Zephyrs returned the favor last night with a 3-0 win. Andrew Miller (1-2) returned from the DL with 6 shutout innings for the win. Bryan Corey allowed all 3 New Orleans runs on 10 hits in an 8-inning start to take the loss. Matt DeSalvo worked a scoreless ninth for his second save. Jai Miller drove in 2 of New Orleans' runs and Alejandro De Aza had the other as New Orleans out-hit OKC 11-3.
MORE SHUTOUT NOTES: OKC has been involved in a shutout in 3 of its last 4 games and 4 of the last 9. OKC was shut out last night, Sunday at Iowa and Aug. 25 at Omaha, while winning 3-0 on Tuesday. The RedHawks have been blanked 9 times this year and have thrown 8 shutouts.
ZANESKI, COOPER DEBUT: Catcher Zach Zaneski and reliever Chris Cooper made their RedHawk debuts last night. Zaneski appeared above low Class A for the first time, while Cooper pitched in affiliated ball for the first time since 2006. Zaneski was the 27th position player and Cooper the 32nd pitcher to appear for the RedHawks this year. OKC will use a 60th player if and when Jared Bolden, promoted from Class A Hickory on Tuesday, gets into a game.
CHANCES REDUCED: The RedHawks had only 6 baserunners last night (plus one that reached on an error), collecting 3 singles and 3 walks. They did not get a runner to third base and went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position after going 6-for-27 in the first 2 games of the series in that category. The RedHawks drew 19 walks while striking out 6 times in Games 1-2, but fanned 12 times last night and with 3 free passes.
HOME COOKING: Heading into tonight's final home game, the RedHawks have a chance to surpass last year's win total at The Brick. The 2008 RedHawks, who won the division by 7.5 games and advanced to the PCL Finals, went 40-32 at home. The 2009 Hawks enter tonight 40-31. Last year's club was 36-36 on the road, this year's is 27-40.
REVOLVING DOOR: The RedHawks moves this week: In are pitchers Mike Wood and Chris Cooper, outfielders Kevin Thompson and Justin Leone signed as free agents. Zach Zaneski and Jared Bolden were promoted from within the system. Out are Ryan Freel (released), Brandon McCarthy and Esteban German (activated from rehab assignments), Brandon Boggs (recalled and placed on the 60-day DL with a left shoulder dislocation), and Guillermo Moscoso, Warner Madrigal and catcher Kevin Richardson (September callups).
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME SEPT. 22: The newly-named Triple-A Baseball National Championship Game will have its fourth edition Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 6:05 pm CDT at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. The annual meeting of the playoff champions from the International and Pacific Coast Leagues It will be broadcast live again this season on ESPN2 and Westwood One radio.
