Murillo, Whitesell lead Aces to victory

September 3, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release

RENO, Nev.- Agustin Murillo had three hits and three RBIs, and Josh Whitesell knocked in the eventual game-winning run as Reno knocked off Sacramento for the second-straight night Wednesday at Aces Ballpark.

The Aces took a 4-1 lead early thanks mostly to Murillo's bat. Reno's third baseman had a two-run double in the second and an RBI-double in the fourth, before Sacramento came back to tie the game in the seventh. In the home half of the eighth, Eric Byrnes led off with a double to center, and Whitesell promptly drove him home with an opposite field double down the left-field line for what proved to be the game-winning run.

Aces starting pitcher Daniel Cabrera threw five innings, striking out four and allowing only two runs, but did not factor in the decision. Jose Marte (4-1) earned the win despite allowing two runs over two innings of work. Scott Maine notched his first-career Triple-A save by tossing a perfect ninth inning.

The River Cats received six innings out of starter Jerome Williams, who gave up four runs while striking out three. Michael Benacka (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing the eventual game-winning run in the eighth.

Offensively for the Aces, Murillo led the way, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Byrnes had a two-hit night for Reno, and Taylor Harbin collected his first Triple-A hit with an RBI single in the fourth inning.

The Aces look for the series win Thursday as they send RHP Hector Ambriz (8-9, 5.89 ERA) to the hill to face River Cats RHP Clayton Mortensen (9-8, 4.39 ERA). Thursday's game will be the final Coors Night Thursday Night of the season, with $2 Coors Lights available until the fifth inning. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PT.
