RedHawks Prey on \'Topes, 3-1
July 9, 2008 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
The Oklahoma RedHawks (52-42) stymied the Albuquerque Isotopes (40-53) for the second straight game for a 3-1 victory Wednesday afternoon at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. Today's loss has now set a new season-high of nine-straight losses away from Isotopes Park, one shy of the team record for consecutive road losses of ten set on July 28-August 15, 2004.
The Isotopes jumped to an early lead in the second when Andrew Beattie slashed a two-out triple to left field that set up Chase Lambin, who's grounder to RedHawks first baseman Chris Shelton was misplayed, allowing to dash home for the quick 1-0 Isotopes lead.
Travis Metcalf led the third inning off for the RedHawks by singling to left field and advanced to second after Kevin Richardson was hit by a pitch from 'Topes starter Steve Woodard. With two men on and one out, Jason Ellison slapped a single to left that scored Metcalf to tie the game at one while Richardson dashed into third. John Mayberry then singled to left-center to plate Richardson and gave Oklahoma the 2-1 advantage.
Oklahoma added an additional run in the eighth when Ryan Roberts hammered an 0-2 offering from reliever Kenny Baugh into the second deck in right field for a solo home run that gave the RedHawks a two-run advantage, 3-1.
Following an hour and two minute rain delay along with significant attempts by the grounds crew to make the field playable, the game was called after eight innings, giving the RedHawks the 3-1 victory.
The Isotopes again received a strong starting pitching performance from their starter Woodard (0-2), who was making his first start since returning from the disabled list on July 5 and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out six in the loss.
Albuquerque will look to flame-throwing righty Frankie De La Cruz (9-4, 4.55) to avoid the sweep as he takes the ball for the Isotopes against Oklahoma right-hander Elizardo Ramirez (8-3, 4.21) at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark with first pitch set for 6:05 PM MT.
After a quick trip to Oklahoma the Isotopes return to the Duke City this Friday, July 11 to begin a weekend series against the Iowa Cubs, Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. The short homestand includes promotional highlights such as a baseball giveaway and the perennial fan favorite Orbit Bobblehead giveaway on Saturday, July 12.
