Oklahoma City Comets News Release
TODAY'S MATCHUP
RH Steve Woodard (0-1, 5.60) vs. RH Kazuo Fukumori (0-3, 3.67)
Woodard: Making second start of the season (Last Start: 7 R on 9 H in 5/13 loss @ CSP)
Fukumori: Third spot start of 2008 (2 R on 5 H over 5.0 IP on 7/01 @ NOZ in last start) LAST GAME: Brian Gordon and Kea Kometani combined to shutout the Isotopes 4-0 last night. Gordon struck out eight in his third spot start of the season, allowing just two hits over six innings. Kometani allowed a single to the first batter he faced before retiring the final nine 'Topes he faced. Oklahoma plated one run in the first and three in the seventh to provide the offense.
SHUTOUT STORIES: Oklahoma pitchers have thrown five shutouts this season including last night's combined effort. It marked the second time the RedHawks received shutout baseball during a spot start (Steve Rowe on June 17 in 6-0 win at Nashville). Albuquerque has been shutout four times this season, most recently at Iowa in game two of a doubleheader on June 27 (7-0 I-Cubs).
GORDON THE GREAT: Brian Gordon matched the second best strikeout effort by any RedHawk this season when he retired eight on strikes last night. Eric Hurley struck out eight twice, while Robinson Tejeda accomplished the feat once. Tejeda holds the single game high at 11 strikeouts in a game at Memphis on May 17.
HYATT PROMOTED: Jared Hyatt, the Rangers 33rd round selection in the 2007 draft, was promoted from Bakersfield today to start for the RedHawks, but will pitch in relief instead. Hyatt's flight from California was delayed and he will not be at the ballpark until 11 am. The right-hander was selected with the 1008th pick in the draft after playing five seasons of college baseball at Georgia Tech. Hyatt pitched in Arizona, Bakersfield, and Clinton last season, going 0-3 with a combined ERA of 3.09. He began the season in the Blaze bullpen before entering the rotation, and compiled a 6-5 record with a 3.92 earned run average. Hyatt is the second pitcher to throw for Oklahoma that began the season with High-A Bakersfield. Tommy Hunter also began the season in the California League.
ALBUQUERQUE AT A GLANCE: Dallas McPherson had Tuesday off, a scheduled day of rest. The third baseman had back surgery in 2006 and missed all of 2007 for the recovery process... Despite taking the loss, Owasso, OK native Dallas Trahern pitched well yesterday, allowing one run on eight hits over six innings while striking out one and walking two. It was Trahern's fifth quality start for the Isotopes in 13 attempts... Florida added catcher Alberto Concepcion to the Isotopes roster from Double-A Carolina. PCL All-Star John Baker was promoted to the Majors yesterday, and Brett Hayes was promoted from Carolina prior to Tuesday's game.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Texas edged the LA Angels of Anaheim 3-2. Former RedHawk Matt Harrison pitched seven innings and allowed two runs to win his Major League debut... Frisco beat Arkansas 9-3... Bakersfield blanked Stockton 6-0... Clinton and Spokane each had Tuesday off.
DOT-DOT-DOT: Oklahoma enters play today with an eight game lead over Round Rock within the American South division. This is the largest lead over the rest of the division that the RedHawks have had all season, having maintained all or a share of first place since the fifth day of the season... Joaquin Arias had returned to the lineup Tuesday after a day off Monday. Arias had the day off to rest his shoulder as he works his way back to full strength from surgery in 2007. Arias has played in 73 games this season, 19 of which he has manned shortstop, including his last five straight games... The RedHawks allowed a season-low three hits in last night's win... Nelson Cruz is two home runs shy of tying for tenth place in Oklahoma City Triple-A history (Scott Sheldon- 28 in 1999).
ON THE AIR: Every game this season can be heard on the RedHawks Radio Network, led by broadcaster Jim Byers for the ninth season, and joined by Adam Marco during each homestand.
