July 9, 2008 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
The New Orleans Zephyrs got a huge night from catcher Raul Casanova to break out of their losing streak, winning 10-6 over the visiting Memphis Redbirds on Wednesday.
Casanova led the Zephyrs offensively, going 3-4 with six RBI, four off of a third-inning grand slam. In fact, the first four Zephyrs runs of the game were driven in by Casanova, as he hit a two-run homer in the second inning as well.
Starting pitcher Claudio Vargas (3-1) got the win after giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits in five innings. Vargas contributed on the offensive side as well, going 2-2 with an RBI.
Memphis starting pitcher Clayton Mortensen (4-2) got the loss after giving up eight runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings of play.
Former LSU Tiger Nick Stavinoha, now a right fielder for the Redbirds, continued his hot hitting with a solo homer in the game. Stavinoha now has four home runs in three games in the series.
With Memphis still holding a 2-1 edge in the four-game New Orleans set, the Zephyrs will try for the split when they face off against the Redbirds on Thursday in a game scheduled for 7:00 PM CT.
