Memphis Redbirds News Release

Memphis, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds will turn back the clock and honor the Negro Leagues this Saturday.

The Redbirds and Omaha Royals are scheduled to play a day-night doubleheader Saturday with the first game beginning at 12:05 p.m. and the second game at 6:05 p.m. In the nightcap the Redbirds will wear throwback Memphis Red Sox uniforms and the Royals will don Homestead Grays uniforms. Prior to the night game former Negro League players Joe B. Scott, Lonnie Harris, Ollie Brantley and James Woods will sign autographs of specially produced baseball cards by IMEC and Tactical Magic with the Ernest C. Withers photos supplied courtesy of Panopticon Gallery, Boston.

Following the first game the Redbirds will host Conversations with History: Memories of the Negro Leagues. The aforementioned players join Redbirds President of Baseball Operations/GM Dave Chase and Soul Classics 103.5's Henry Nelson for the symposium. Admission is free and questions from the audience are encouraged. The event will be held on the first floor of the Toyota Center located next to AutoZone Park.

"Everyone knows the history of baseball in Memphis - at least as it relates to the Memphis Chicks, but too few understand the significance of Negro League Baseball in our community's history," Chase said. "Over the last 10 years, the Redbirds have annually saluted the Memphis Red Sox and think this unique opportunity for fans to ask questions to the players that wore the Red Sox uniforms and played at Martin Stadium."
