Tonight's Game-- The RedHawks will try for a series victory when they finish their four-game set against the Express at 7:05 p.m. Paul Clemens looks for his seventh win in eight starts, and former longtime Astro Roy Oswalt will make the start for the Express.
Last Night-- One night after being shutout, the RedHawks came alive at the plate hitting three home runs in an 8-5 win over the Express. Similar to Friday, the RedHawks trailed early. Julio Borbon opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the second. The RedHawks had been held scoreless for 12 straight innings until an Angel Sanchez RBI single in the fourth. In the fifth, the RedHawks officially busted out of their mini-slump with five runs. Jimmy Paredes tied the game with an RBI single, and Scott Moore followed with a go-ahead sac fly. Mike Hessman and Brad Snyder each left the yard to give the RedHawks their first back-to-back home runs of the season. Landon Powell hit his fifth homer of the season in the eighth. Trailing 8-2, the Express scored three in the ninth before Juan Abreu struck out Borbon to end the game. Armando Galarraga (1-1) earned his first win, going five strong innings. He retired the final 10 hitters he faced.
Tonight's Probable Pitchers-- Paul Clemens takes the mound and will try to earn his seventh win over his last eight starts...Clemens is coming off a win Tuesday in New Orleans in which he allowed all five runs in the third inning...Over his other four innings he held the Zephyrs scoreless with just two hits...Although Clemens has won six of his previous seven starts, his ERA over that time is 6.13 overall and 4.98 in the wins...He has allowed four runs or more in the four of the wins and the RedHawks are averaging 9.2 runs per game...Clemens faced Round Rock in OKC on April 28, allowing only a two-run homer over five innings...He retired nine of the final 10 batters he faced...Express starter Roy Oswalt is certainly no stranger to the Astros organization...Oswalt was signed by the Astros in May, 1997 and spent 2001-2010 as a mainstay in the Houston rotation, going 143-82 with a 3.42 ERA...He signed with Texas in May and has been working his way back toward the Major Leagues...In three starts with the Express and Double-A Frisco, Oswalt has allowed eight runs and 14 hits over 9.1 IP...He is scheduled to throw around 100 pitches tonight.
Super Snyder-- With a 2-for-4 night, Brad Snyder extended his current hitting streak to 14 games--the best by a RedHawk this season. During the streak he is hitting .411 (21x51) with two home runs and 10 RBIs. He is the only player in Triple-A with at least 10 homers and 10 stolen bases.
Friendly Family Feud-- Brad Snyder's younger brother, Ben, is a pitcher for the Express. After flying out Thursday night, Brad is 1-for-3 against Ben this season. The brothers from Bellevue, Ohio had never faced each other in an official game until April 26.
Barnes' Big Bat-- Since joining the RedHawks on May 27, Brandon Barnes has hit safely in 17 of 19 games to the tune of a .377 average. He is 6-for-12 with three extra-base hits since his 12-game hitting streak ended Wed.
Sweet 16-- After Julio Borbon's two-run homer the in second inning, Armando Galarraga and Aneury Rodriguez combined to retire the next 16 straight Express hitters. The previous longest streak of consecutive hitters retired this season had been 11. It had happened twice, most recently on June 5 against Iowa.
Back and Forth-- Over the last eight games, the RedHawks have alternated wins and losses each day.
Speedy & Streaky Jimmy-- Jimmy Paredes has collected 17 hits over his last eight games, but he's been held hitless three times. He swiped two bags last night to become with fourth player in the PCL with at least 20 SB's.
Hessman The Hammer-- Mike Hessman hit his 19th homer of the season last night. Since May 15, his 14 home runs are more than anyone else in the Minors. He is also tied with Reno's Ryan Wheeler for most RBIs in the PCL during that time with 33.
Walking Toward Danger?-- Last night the RedHawks did not walk a batter for the first time since May 31 against Nashville. Walks have been a recent problem, racking up 49 over the previous nine games, with at least five in a game six times. Even with last night included, their strikeout-to-walk ratio during the last 10 games has been 63/49 and they have walked more than they have struck out four times in the last six games.
So The Pitcher Doesn't Bat?-- The RedHawks are playing a series against an American League affiliate for the first time in over a month. They are 6-8 in games with a DH, and the DH's are hitting a combined .245 but have driven in 15 runs in 14 games.
Against the Express-- The RedHawks have won five of seven so far against the Express...Even after being shutout Friday, they are hitting .329 and have scored 52 runs...J.B. Shuck is 10-for-21 and went 5-for-5 in OKC back on April 28...Scott Moore has collected 11 RBIs...Last season the Express won 10 of 16, but the RedHawks went 5-3 at The Dell Diamond... From 1983-2010, the Oklahoma City franchise was affiliated with the Texas Rangers, and from 2000-2010, Round Rock served as an Astros' affiliate first for Double-A, then Triple-A beginning in 2005.
