Today's Game-- The RedHawks will try and finish the road trip on a winning note in today's Memorial Day matinee. Today is the last meeting between these two teams until August 27.
Last Night-- Rehabbing Los Angles Dodgers outfielders Matt Kemp and Juan Rivera each hit home runs as the Isotopes had another big day at the plate and held off a furious rally by the RedHawks to win 11-9. One day after setting a franchise record with nine doubles, the Isotopes tied a season high with four homers and racked up 18 more hits. Both Kemp and Rivera made an impact immediately in the first inning. Kemp hit an RBI single, and Rivera followed with a two-run homer out to right to make it 3-0. The Redhawks got on the board in the second with a sac fly by Brian Bixler, but Kemp answered with a two-run homer to give the Isotopes a 5-1 lead. Albuquerque poured on five more in the sixth, including homers by Josh Bard and Jeff Baisley. The RedHawks scored eight runs over the final two innings and brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the ninth. Scott Rice ended the rally and game by striking out Brandon Barnes to earn his fifth save. Isotopes pitcher Fernando Nieve (2-2) had his best game of the season, allowing one run and three hits with seven strikeouts over five innings. Paul Clemens (5-4) had another tough night at Isotopes Park, allowing eight runs and 11 hits over 5.1 innings.
Today's Probable Pitchers-- Aneury Rodriguez looks for consecutive wins for the first time this season...Rodriguez took the victory in Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader at Colorado Springs after pitching 3.2 innings of relief following Jordan Lyles...He allowed three runs and five hits in the RedHawks' 7-4 win...Rodriguez has had trouble with efficiency, lasting longer than five innings twice in eight starts...Four times he has gone less than five innings and aveages about 19.1 pitches per inning for the season...He's had mixed results against the Istopes this year...On April 21 at home, he allowed a season-high six runs over 3.2 innings, but at Isotopes Park on May 2, he turned in his best start of the year, going a season-high seven innings and surrendering just one run...Rodriguez's opponent in that game was Mike Parisi, who also makes the start today...In his next start after facing the RedHawks, Parisi went on the DL with a shoulder impingement...He returned Wednesday and allowed one run and four hits over four innings against Fresno...His 2.57 ERA leads the PCL, and he also ranks fifth with a 1.17 WHIP...In his five starts at Isotopes Park, Parisi is an impressive 1-0 with a 2.16 ERA.
Isotopes Made of Kryptonite-- It's been a frustrating season series against Albuquerque to say the least. Against the Isotopes, the RedHawks hit .268, but .291 against the rest of the league. Their ERA against the Istopes is 6.07, but 4.42 against everyone else. Albuquerque hits .347 against the RedHawks, but just .275 against other PCL opponents. Their ERA is 4.63 against the RedHawks, but 5.39 in other league games. Albuquerque has scored 10 or more runs three times in 11 games against the RedHawks. Other opponents have scored at least 10 just four times in 39 games combined.
Staying in the Park-- The RedHawks have been held without a homer in conseuctive games for the first time since April 29-30. It's also the first time it's happened in the same series since April 15-16 in Memphis. Even with the recent mini-drought, the RedHawks are still second in the PCL with 58 home runs. The RedHawks hit 19 homers in 25 games in April. Their 39 homers this month (25 games) is four more than anyone else in the PCL.
Hot Bats-- Over their last 15 games, the RedHawks have scored 105 runs with 172 hits, including 27 homers. Not surprisingly, they've gone 10-5 during this stretch.
Powerful Powell-- All four of Landon Powell's home runs have come over during the current road trip. He has hit safely in all eight games he's played in, going 12-for-25 with 11 RBIs. Powell had just six RBIs for the season until the recent surge.
Fabulous Fernando-- Fernando Martinez is currently on an eight-game hit streak, the third time this season he's held a streak that long. He's hitting .423 (11-for-26) with seven RBI's during the streak.
Paredes Cooling Down-- After a stretch in which he collected 11 multi-hit games in 13 overall, Jimmy Paredes is 2-for-18 over his last four games and 0 for his last 12.
Welcome Back, Brandon-- Yesterday outfielder Brandon Barnes was added to the RedHawks roster from Double-A Corpus Christi, going 1-for-4 with an RBI. Barnes was hitting .317 with seven homers and 31 RBIs for the Hooks, all second on the team. He was leading the Texas league with 27 extra-base hits and 20 doubles.
Road Trip Challenge-- Eleven games into a 12-game road trip through hitter-friendly Reno, Colorado Springs, and Albuquerque, the RedHawks pitching staff has posted a 7.50 ERA. The starters are 4-5 with a 9.59 ERA (54 ER/50.2 IP) and the relievers are 2-0 with three saves and a 4.81 ERA (21 ER/39.1 IP).
Against the Isotopes-- The RedHawks are 3-8 against Albuquerque, including three one-run losses...The RedHawks are 25-14 against the rest of the league and the Isotopes are 21-19 against the rest of the PCL...The RedHawks have been outscored 75-59 and the Isotopes are hitting .347 against the RedHawks pitching staff...This is a pivotal series between the top two teams in the American Southern division since their next meeting will not be until the final week of the season, August 27-30 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
