Conrad And Petit Recognized As Top Performers
Published on May 28, 2012 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Brooks Conrad of the Nashville Sounds and Yusmeiro Petit of the Fresno Grizzlies were the best of the best in the Pacific Coast League last week, and today they were named the PCL Player and Pitcher of the Week from May 21st to 27th in recognition of their performances.
Conrad smashed his way across the league last week, recording an extra-base hit in each one while hitting a home run every day from the 23rd to the 26th. His five home runs and 15 RBIs both paced the PCL, as he led the league with a 1.083 slugging percentage while hitting .417. The utility player spent time at first, second, and third base, as well as left field and designated hitter last week as Nashville went 4-2 in the six games he played in.
Born in San Diego, California, Conrad was drafted in the eighth round of the 2001 draft by the Houston Astros. In 2008 he signed as a free agent with the Oakland Athletics and made his Major League debut on July 21st of that year. Conrad is most well-known for his clutch hits as a utility infielder for Atlanta; he had a number of game-winning moments with the Braves in 2010, most notably a walk-off grand slam against the Cincinatti Reds on May 20th. After signing a deal with the Milwaukee Brewers this year, he has hit .405 for the Nashville Sounds while splitting time between the PCL and the Major League club.
Petit earns his accolades after putting together two very solid starts last week. On May 21st in Albuquerque he held the Isotopes to just one run in seven innings while striking out nine, then bested himself by blanking the Sky Sox over six innings at Chukchansi Park in Fresno on Saturday, striking out ten and earning the win. His combined 19 strikeouts led the PCL, and his one run, seven hits, and three walks over 13 innings was good for a stellar 0.69 ERA and 0.77 WHIP.
Petit, a native of Venezuela, first signed as a free agent by the New York Mets in 2001. In 2005 he was traded with Mike Jacobs to the Florida Marlins for Carlos Delgado, and made his MLB debut on May 14th, 2006 against the Pittsburgh Pirates as he pitched a scoreless inning. After subsequent seasons with Arizona and Seattle, the right-hander signed a contract with the San Francisco Giants this off-season. In 2012, Petit holds a 2-2 record and 3.98 ERA with the Grizzlies, striking out 48 in 54.1 innings.
