Today's Game-- The RedHawks seek to avoid losing three straight when they take on the Albuquerque Isotopes at 7:35 p.m. Aneury Rodriguez looks to break a personal three-game skid as the RedHawks will try to work their way toward earning a split in the series.
Last Night-- For the third time in six meetings, the Isotopes beat the RedHawks by a single tally, taking a 7-6 victory Tuesday night. Albuquerque scored in each of the first six innings and raced out to a 4-0 lead through three innings. The RedHawks got on the board in the top of the fourth when Justin Ruggiano hit a home run to right field to make it 4-1. Fernando Martinez launched a three-run shot in the fifth get the RedHawks within a run at 5-4, and the RedHawks pulled even in the next inning when a two-out error paved the way for two runs tie the game at 6-6. Josh Fields lifted a sac fly to right field in the bottom of the inning, which proved to be the difference in the ballgame. Despite allowing the tying run to score in the sixth, Brent Leach (1-2) picked up his first win of year. Mickey Storey (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs-one earned-in two innings of work. Josh Wall struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth to earn his sixth save of the season.
Tonight's Probable Pitchers-- Aneury Rodriguez makes his team-leading sixth start of the season and will aim for his first win since his season debut on April 6...In each of his last two starts, Rodriguez has not been able to make it thorugh four innings...His high pitch counts have prevented him from going deep into ballgames, and has not lasted longer than five innings, averaging 21.2 pitches per inning...He is currently second in the PCL with 30 strikeouts and is tops with a 12.7 K/9 rate...In his previous start against the Isotopes on April 21, Rodriguez allowed a season-high six runs over 3.2 IP and took the loss...Mike Parisi has been very consistent for the Isotopes in his five previous starts...He has yet to allow more than three runs in a game and has allowed two runs or less four times...Parisi has lasted seven innnings in each of his last two starts and is coming off a tough loss in New Orleans in which he allowed just one run and four hits with seven strikeouts...He was originally drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 9th Round of the 2004 Draft and was signed by the Dodgers in the middle of last season.
Trouble Against the 'Topes-- After last night's loss, the RedHawks are 1-5 against Albuquerque, but 15-5 against the rest of the PCL. (Albuquerque is 10-10 against other opponents.) The RedHawks hit just .261 against the Isotopes, but .289 against everyone else. Their team ERA is 4.89 against Albuquerque, but 3.09 against the rest of league. The most glaring discrepancy is with the Isotopes' team ERA. Against the RedHawks it's a solid 3.57, but against others it balloons to 5.78.
Close Calls-- Last was the RedHawks' sixth one-run loss of the season, tied with Round Rock and Memphis for second-most in the PCL. (Iowa has seven.) OKC is now 4-6 in one-run affairs.
Sweet Shuck-- J.B. Shuck is 11-for-17 over his last three games. With the recent outburst, Shuck raised his season average from .245 to .343. On Saturday he became the first RedHawk to collect five hits in a game this year and the first since Jordan Schafer did it while on a rehab assignment August 20, 2011 against Iowa. It's the second time Shuck has had a five-hit game in his career, with the first coming August 5, 2009 with Lancaster. He went 5-for-6 that game as the JetHawks pounded out 25 hits in an 18-5 win over the High Desert Mavericks.
Moore Offense-- Scott Moore is currently pacing the PCL in on-base percentage (.488) and doubles (12), and ranks second in extra-base hits (15), fifth in slugging percentage (.662), and his .368 average is eighth-best. He leads the team with nine multi-RBI games and eight multi-hit games. Last night he committed his first error in 88 chances.
Notable Streaks-- Fernando Martinez holds the team's longest current hitting streak at eight games (.297, 11x37). J.B. Shuck is next with five straight (.571, 12x21). Scott Moore snapped his season-best six-game streak last night after going 0-for-5.
You Better Think Twice-- The RedHawks have caught 13 of 26 attempted base stealers for a 50.0% caught stealing rate, best in the PCL. Landon Powell has hosed out five of the seven who've tried to steal against him, and Carlos Corporan is 8-for-19.
Rough Starts-- After posting a 2.14 ERA through the first 16 games of the season, the starting rotation has faltered a bit lately. Over the last 10 games, the starting rotation has a 6.37 ERA (38 ER/53.2 IP) and has allowed 70 hits in 53.2 innings. Four of those starts have lasted less than five innings
Awesome April-- Despite finishing April with a loss, the RedHawks had a very successful opening month. They recorded the third-most wins (16) in the league while having the third-best ERA (3.42) and sixth-best batting average (.285). It's was the most wins in April and the best winning percentage in a month since an 18-9 April, 2008.
Against the Isotopes-- The RedHawks have had all sorts of trouble against the Isotopes, losing five of six so far in 2012...Last week the Isotopes came into Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark and took three of four, including the first three straight...Two games were decided by one run, including the wild 11-10, 14-inning affair on April 22...The Isotopes are hitting .305 as a team and are averaging over six runs per game against OKC...These two teams next meet May 25-28 back in Albuquerque.
