Today's Game: The RedHawks look to continue their recent roll and start the month of May on the right foot when they face the Nashville Sounds at 7:05 p.m.
Last Game: The RedHawks tallied three runs in the second inning and rode the early advantage to a 4-2 win over Nashville. Marc Krauss started the scoring with a homer and Che-Hsuan Lin added an RBI groundout. Jonathan Villar added some excitement with a straight steal of home to make it 3-0. The pitching staff took it from there, holding the Sounds to two runs and seven hits. Jarred Cosart earned the win and improved to 3-0 after he allowed just one run over 5.1 innings with six strikeouts. With closer Jose Valdez unavailable, Josh Zeid finished things in the ninth to earn his second save.
Today's Probable Pitcher: Wes Musick makes his second start, looking to keep building on his strong season...After allowing four runs in his first appearance of the season, Musick has allowed just one run and five hits with 15 strikeouts over his last five games (14 IP)...The lefty carries a streak of 11 consecutive scoreless innings coming into tonight, during which opponents are hitting a mere .108 (4-for-37)...In his one previous start this season, Musick threw five scoreless innings and combined on a five-hit shutout with Jarred Cosart and Kyle Hallock, blanking Memphis, 11-0 on April 15....He's faced Nashville once this season, giving up one run and one hit (solo HR to Dayton Buller) over three innings on April 10...In his career, Musick is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA in three appearances (two starts) against the Sounds.
Against the Sounds: 2013: 4-1 2012: 13-3 All-time: 131-114 In OKC: 70-52
The RedHawks won two of three in a rain-shortened, three-game series in Nashville earlier this season...It was a low-scoring series, with the two teams putting up 13 runs combined (OKC-8, NAS-5)...The RedHawks hit .204 while the Sounds were held to a .189 team average...The RedHawks have won four straight overall and each of the last seven games at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark...In 2012 the RedHawks dominated the season series, winning 13 of 16 games, including seven of eight in Oklahoma City...The RedHawks pitching staff posted an outstanding 2.67 ERA...OKC has claimed the season series in four of the last five years.
That Was Close: It should come as no surprise all five games between the RedHawks and Sounds in 2013 have been decided by two runs or less, since 11 of 16 games last season were decided by that margin. Over the last eight meetings, the one game not decided by two runs or less was a 10-7 RedHawks win on June 22, 2012 in Nashville.
Today's Transactions: Pitcher Jason Stoffel and catcher Carlos Perez have both joined the RedHawks from Double-A Corpus Christi. Stoffel has served as the Hooks closer the last two years, racking up 32 saves, including a Texas League-leading 27 in 2012. This season Stoffel was 5/7 in save opportunities with a 1.23 ERA. Perez hit .283 with a home run and five RBI in his first 16 games with Corpus Christi. The 22-year-old Venezuelan was acquired in a trade with Toronto last July. In a coresponding move, pitcher Lance Day (0-1, 12.00) was sent to Extended Spring Training.
Au Revoir, April: The RedHawks had a very successful opening month, racking up the second-most wins in the PCL (Tacoma-16). Their .295 average was third-best in the league and was also their best April batting average since 2005 (.299).
Swipe Out: Jonathan Villar's straight steal of home last night brought the RedHakws total up to 15 over the last four games. Their season total now stands at 35, which is the best in the PCL. It's the most steals they've had in one month since July, 2011 (41).
On the Marc: Marc Krauss has hit safely in 13 of 14 games in Oklahoma City, batting at a .408 clip with four homers and 20 RBI. His 25 RBI are sixth in the PCL and ranks first among Astros minor leaguers.
Valiant Villar: After getting off to a 2-for-34 start, Jonathan Villar is hitting .413 (26x63) over his last 15 games. He's hit safely in 13 of the games and collected more than one hit in nine of his last 11 contests. Despite not having a multi-hit game until the 11th game of the season, he is now tied for the team lead with Jimmy Paredes with 11. During this stretch he has collected all 11 of his RBI and all nine of his extra-base hits for the season.
Paredes Patiently Popping Off: Jimmy Paredes is 12-for-28 (.429) during his current seven-game hit streak and has collected at least two hits four times. Paredes leads the team with 34 hits and 11 multi-hit games. Paredes' walk total now stands at 11, exactly half of what he had for all of 2012 (22). He didn't draw his 11th walk last season until June 27.
Thunder Buddies: Last season, Trevor Crowe and Jake Elmore combined to hit four home runs in 797 at-bats. They equaled that total in 173 at-bats this season after both went yard on Monday. Furthermore, each has gone deep in the same game twice. In addition to Monday, both slammed dingers in Memphis on April 7.
Yard Work: The RedHawks have homered in a season-best four-straight games. Their 19 HR this season rank just tied for 13th in the PCL. On the other hand, the 15 home runs allowed by the pitching staff are second-least in the PCL, just one more than Memphis.
All or Nothing: Through the first 25 games of the season, the RedHawks pitching staff has allowed seven or more runs 13 times, but has limited the opposition to three runs or less in the other 12 games.
