Round Rock Express News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa - Round Rock Express starter Josh Lindblom gave up just two hits to Iowa Cubs batters while leading the Express to a 1-0 victory Wednesday night at Principal Park.
In true pitcher's duel fashion, Iowa starter Chris Rusin did his job of keeping the Express offense quiet as well. Heading into the fifth inning, each team had only managed two hits.
The Express finally got on the board in the top of the fifth with a lead-off double from left fielder Aaron Cunningham. He advanced to third on a ground out by 1B Chris McGuiness. Greg Miclat singled in the next at-bat to plate Cunningham and give the E-Train the only run of the night.
The Express got a hit in each of the final four innings and had runners in scoring position twice, but were unable to cash in and produce another run.
Cubs 2B Logan Watkins was the only Iowa batter with any success off Lindblom, hitting a single in the second inning and a double in the third. He also reached base via a walk in the sixth. The only other Iowa batter to reach base with Lindblom on the mound was 1B Brad Nelson who drew a walk in the eighth.
Express closer Cory Burns came in for Lindblom in the ninth. Burns, who has been a perfect six-for-six in save opportunities this season, flirted with disaster. The Cubs' man-of-the-night Watkins led off the ninth with a single to shallow center. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from the next batter. Designated hitter Ryan Sweeny hit a single of his own to put runners on first and third with two outs. Burns threw a five-pitch walk to Josh Vitters, just his second walk of the season, to load the bases and put the winning run in scoring position. He got former Express Brian Bogusevic to ground out on the second pitch and end the game.
With this win, Lindblom improved to 4-0 while Rusin dropped to 1-3 with the loss. Burns picked up his seventh save and the 11th for the Express bullpen.
The series finale between the two teams has been postponed tomorrow due to inclement weather expected in the area. The game will be made up as part of a double header when the E-Train heads back to Iowa in June.
The Express returns home on Friday to face the Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers) at 7:05 p.m. Budweiser Friday Fireworks will light up the Central Texas sky following the conclusion of the game.
