Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, ND - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks made a series of roster moves Monday whichs includes the return of INF C.J. Retherford to the club for Monday night's game against the Lincoln Saltdogs at Newman Outdoor Field.
To make room for Retherford on the roster, Fargo-Moorhead released INF Jose G. Garcia and traded INF Ryan Pineda to the Grand Prairie AirHogs for a player to be named later.
Retherford, 27, was released late last week by the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. He had been playing for the Chattanooga Lookouts of the Southern League (AA) where he was batting .219 with 11 doubles, two triples, four home runs, 26 RBIs and 18 runs scored in 47 games.
This is Retherford's second tour of duty with the RedHawks. He signed with Fargo-Moorhead in 2011 and became the team's top offensive threat. Retherford batted .339 with 24 doubles, four home runs, 37 RBIs and 34 runs scored in 56 games. His play got the Dodgers attention, and they purchased his contract following the season.
In 2012, Retherford appeared in 74 games for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the California League (A+), where he batted .343 with 19 doubles, two triples, 20 home runs, 72 RBIs and 49 runs scored. He was promoted to Chattanooga later in the summer where he batted .250 with six doubles, two triples, three home runs and 20 RBIS in 44 games.
Retherford was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Chicago White Sox in 2007 following the end of his college career at Arizona State University. He reached the Triple-A level with the White Sox in 2010.
Garcia batted .226 with one double, three RBIs, 11 runs scored and four stolen bases in 17 games for Fargo-Moorhead this season.
Pineda batted .351 with two doubles, four RBIs, five runs scored and two stolen bases in 11 games for the RedHawks in 2013. He has reported to Grand Prairie and will be on their roster tonight.
