
Sox Drop RailCats 9-5 in Series Opener

AMARILLO, Texas - Amarillo had five consecutive hits to start the fourth inning on their way to a five-run frame in a 9-5 victory over the RailCats in the series opener on Monday night. Gary (10-7) falls to second place in the Central, one game back of Wichita.
With the game tied at one entering the fourth, the first five Amarillo hitters reached on hits and came around to score against RailCats starting pitcher Alain Quijano. Brandon Jones, Trey Ford and Chris Valencia had RBI singles and KC Serna ripped a two-run triple to give the Sox a 6-1 lead.
Gary came back with a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Mike Massaro, but the Sox responded with a home run by Joe Weik on the first pitch in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-2.
Quijano (3-1) was charged with seven runs on 10 hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Mike Hanley took over in relief and gave up two unearned runs in the seventh on an RBI hit by Chris Grossman and a sac fly by Weik that extended the lead to 9-2.
The RailCats scored three runs in the eighth, as Massaro and Steve Liddle both tripled, with Liddle's triple scoring a pair. Brian Kolb drove in a run with a groundout to cut the deficit to 9-5.
For the fourth consecutive game, the RailCats plated a run in the first inning. Massaro walked with one out and scored on a double to center by Cristian Guerrero. Gary has scored in the first inning in 12 of their 17 games, totaling 23 first-inning runs.
The Sox tied the game in the second inning on a run-scoring double by Cory Patton.
Amarillo starter Joe Newby (1-2) held the RailCats to two runs, one earned while striking out nine in seven strong innings.
Game two of the series will be on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Ari Ronick (2-1, 3.00) will start for Gary against Sox right-hander Jason Mitchell (0-1, 4.61). The radio broadcast will begin at 7:00 on 89.1 FM The Lakeshore and www.railcatsbaseball.com.
