Huge fourth inning help Sox win third straight

AMARILLO, TX - Joe Newby strikes out nine in the win over the Railcats, 9-5 at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium. Newby's seven innings of work was supported by five Sox runs in the bottom of the fourth, securing his first win of the season, witnessed by 1,042 fans in attendance. The game lasted two hours and forty-two minutes.

Gary South Shore jumped out to a 1-0 lead after Christian Guerro's RBI double scored Mike Massero in the first. David Peralta, the Sox leftfielder, singled to start the second and would score on a Cory Patton double to tie the game. The first five batters in the fourth inning all got hits for the Sox with RBI singles from Brandon Jones, Trey Ford, and Chris Valencia and a triple that brought in two runs by KC Serna. Amarillo's lead into the fifth was 6-1.

The Railcats managed to plate a run in the top of the fifth after Drew Martinez led off and got on thanks to an error by Jones at shortstop. Sox starter, Joe Newby walked Adam Klein three batters later and then Massero singled in Martinez from third, to make the score 6-2. The Sox matched that run in the bottom of the fifth when Joe Weik's solo homer came on the first pitch of the inning.

The Sox manufactured another two runs off Railcats' reliever, Mike Hanley with Jason Martin leading off the inning reaching first base on an error. Martin and Valencia would both score on sacrifice outs to make it 9-2. Lefty reliever, Joe Testa for the Sox would allow three runs on two triples in the eighth inning, which is where the score would remain until the conclusion.

Joe Newby (W, 1-2) pitched seven innings, allowing two runs, one earned on five with two walks and nine strikeouts. Alain Quijano (L, 3-1) went four and a third and allowed seven runs on ten while walking two and striking out two. Hanley, in long relief out of the bullpen for the Railcats and gave up two runs, none earned on four hits with a walk in three and two-thirds innings of work. Josh Giles pitched for the Sox in the ninth and allowed just one hit while striking out a batter.

With the win, the Sox improve to 7-10, while the Railcats drop to 10-7 on the season. Tuesday, the Sox host Gary-South Shore for the second of a three-game series. The game is set to begin at 7:05pm with the Aqua One Pre-Game Show at 6:55pm on Ustream via www.amarillosox.com. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout.
