St. Paul Saints News Release

POMONA, NY (June 3, 2013) - The St. Paul Saints offense came to life on Monday night at Provident Bank Park taking advantage of multiple miscues by the Rockland Boulders as they snapped a three-game losing streak with an 8-5 win.

With the Saints trailing 4-2 going into the seventh inning Dwight Childs led off by reaching on a fielding error by shortstop Nick Del Guidice. Adam Frost singled him to second. After Joey Becker struck out, the Boulders removed starter Dan Sausville in favor of lefty Evan Stermer to face lefty Brad Boyer. Boyer promptly singled to right driving home Childs and sending Frost to third while cutting the deficit to 4-3. A balk by Stermer allowed Frost to score the tying run and moved Boyer to second. Craig Brazell gave the Saints a 5-4 lead with an RBI single to center. Brazell finished the game 3-5 with an RBI.

The Boulders tied the game up in the bottom of the seventh when the Saints committed an error of their own. Scott Knazek led off with an infield single to short. Donnie Webb dropped down a sacrifice bunt and as the catcher Childs went to play the ball, he picked it up and dropped it allowing Webb to reach on the error. Steve Nyisztor laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and third. Saints starter Mark Hamburger exited the game for left-hander Connor Whalen. Jared Edmondson tied the game up with a sacrifice fly, but Whalen finished the inning by getting Chris Edmondson to fly to right with the go ahead run at third. Hamburger went 6.1 innings allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits while walking two and striking out five.

The Saints offense answered right back in the eighth when Jose Hernandez led off with a double. Jordan Tripp then struck out, but reached when the ball got by the catcher on strike three and sent Hernandez to third. Childs then hit a grounder to third, Hernandez froze at third, and Stephen Cardullo threw to second to get Jordan Tripp. As Cardullo threw to second Hernandez broke for the plate and scored on the fielder's choice. Adam Frost then hit his second homer of the season, a two-run shot to right-center giving the Saints the three run cushion. Frost finished the night 3-5 with a homer, two RBI and three runs scored.

The Saints bullpen did the rest with Mikey Mehlich pitching 1.1 innings of shutout relief and Matt Meyer picking up his third save of the season by striking out the two hitters he faced.

The same two teams meet in game two of the four game series Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. eastern. The Saints send RHP Anthony Claggett (3-0, 3.00) to the mound against Boulders RHP Pat Moran (2-0, 3.38). The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM.
