Memphis Redbirds News Release

Omaha, Neb. - The Redbirds are able to come home with their heads held high, after walking away with a thrilling 8-7 victory Friday night at Werner Park. The contest was not for the faint of heart, as both teams combined for 19 hits, and proceeded to strand a total of 32 runners on base.

The Redbirds commenced the night's scoring in the top of the second inning. Cody Stanley (1-4, RBI, R) delivered an RBI single, bringing home Scott Moore (0-3, R, 2 BB) and advancing Xavier Scruggs (1-3, 2B, RBI) to third base, both of whom had reached base on walks. With the bases loaded, Rafael Ortega's (2-4, 3B, 2 RBI) patience paid off as he walked to force in a run. Ed Easley (2-5, HR, 4 RBI) then brought home two more for the Redbirds on a single to left field.

Memphis would not hold the lead for long, as the Storm Chasers struck for six in the bottom of the third inning. Omaha took advantage of misplays in the field from the Redbirds, and it would be enough to chase starter John Gast (0-2, 7.94) from the game after only 2.2 innings pitched. The lefty allowed six runs, just two of which were earned, scattering five hits, while striking out two and walking one.

The Redbird offense would answer right back in the top of the fourth. For the second time in the series, Memphis would record two triples in the same inning, when Alex Mejia (2-4, 3B, 2 R) and Rafael Ortega recorded back-to-back three-base hits. Not to be outdone, Ed Easley would then send his first home run of the season out to deep left field, recapturing the lead for Memphis. The Redbirds would tack on another run to make it 8-6 after a Xavier Scruggs RBI double, scoring Stephen Piscotty (2-5, 2B, R) who reached on a ground-rule double of his own.

The Memphis bullpen would then be able to hold the lead for the final six innings of the contest. Keith Butler (0-0, 0.00) recorded a perfect sixth inning for the Redbirds, his first appearance since May 13, 2014 after undergoing Tommy John Surgery eleven months ago.

However, it was not all smooth sailing for the Redbird bullpen. After a pair of walks, a wild pitch, and an error of his own, Miguel Socolovich (1-0, 0.00) loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh inning. The right-hander was able able to get out of the jam unscathed after notching a pair of strikeouts to end the frame, but not before Alex Mejia made a diving stop at third base to record the first out of the inning.

Sam Tuivailala (0-0, 0.00) recorded a perfect eighth inning, but ran into trouble in the ninth. After loading the bases with Storm Chasers, the fireballer was able to strikeout Francisco Pena to preserve the Memphis victory, and earn his first save of the 2015 season.

The Redbirds return to the Bluff City Saturday for a four game set with the Round Rock Express. Boone Whiting (0-0, 6.14) will get his first start of the season for Memphis, and will be opposed by Anthony Ranaudo (1-0, 0.90). First pitch from AutoZone Park is set for 6:05 p.m.
