Reno Aces News Release
RENO - The Las Vegas 51s earned a series split with a 12-0 thumping of the Reno Aces (@Aces) in Friday night's series finale at Aces Ballpark.
Starter Steven Matz flirted with a no-hitter, firing 6 2/3 frames before allowing a single to Nick Evans to break up the bid.
The two starting pitchers had their way early in the game. Aces starter Vidal Nuño allowed a first inning run on Matt Reynolds' RBI single, but settled in shortly after.
Matz retired the first 11 batters he faced before he issued a two-out walk to Peter O'Brien in the fourth inning. It was a 1-0 game going into the fifth inning when Las Vegas got to Nuño.
Wilfredo Tovar doubled with one out to give the 51s a 2-0 lead, and Reynolds followed with a two-run blast to make it 4-0. Shortly after, Alex Castellanos followed Reynolds' shot with a solo home run of his own. The 1-0 deficit turned to 5-0 in the span of five batters.
Matz's night didn't change as he went back to retiring batters in a hurry. After the walk to O'Brien, he retired the next nine batters in order before Evans' two-out single in the seventh. Garrett Weber (@_weber5) followed with a line-drive single to right-field, putting runners on the corners. Matz buckled down and struck out Matt Pagnozzi (@MattPagnozzi) to end the threat.
Las Vegas tacked on three runs in the eighth and four runs in the ninth. The four runs in the ninth came against Aces' shortstop Danny Worth.
The Aces have an even 8-8 record with four series splits, and a 4-4 homestand to go along with the 4-4 road trip to start the season.
Reno travels to Fresno for the first of four games against the Fresno Grizzlies to start another eight-game road trip. Left-hander Robbie Ray (@RobbieRay) (1-1, 3.29) starts for the Aces against right-hander Brady Rodgers (0-1, 13.50) for the Grizzlies. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
