
Iowa Slips Past Zephyrs 2-1 to Earn Series Split

DES MOINES, Iowa - After right-hander Barret Loux (0-1) allowed an unearned run in the first inning, three Iowa Cubs (7-8) relievers combined for 6.1 scoreless innings en route to a 2-1 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs (7-8) in Pacific Coast League action Friday night at Principal Park.
Righty Blake Cooper (2-0) earned the victory for Iowa, coming in for Loux with two outs in the third inning after he left with an injury. Cooper pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, striking out three while allowing only one hit.
Zephyrs starter Andre Rienzo was saddled with the loss (0-2) after pitching 5.0 innings allowing two runs on six hits and three walks.
New Orleans scored in the opening frame for the third straight game. First baseman Brady Shoemaker knocked in right fielder Jordany Valdespin who bunted and reached on a Loux fielding error to start the inning.
Left fielder Matt Szczur got Iowa even at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning, lining a single up the middle to drive in right fielder John Andreoli. Shortstop Arismendy Alcantara started off the fifth inning with one of his two walks on the game and came around to score on first baseman Mike Baxter's eventual game-winning RBI single to right, giving Iowa the 2-1 lead.
Left-hander Hunter Cervenka loaded the bases in the seventh, but went on to strike out the side to get out of the jam. Left-hander James Russell came on to close the game, pitching 2.0 scoreless innings and striking out four to earn his second save of the season.
Baxter led the I-Cubs at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a RBI, improving his average to .353 on the season.
Derek Dietrich and Shoemaker both went 2-for-4 for the Zephyrs. Dietrich recorded a double and a triple while Shoemaker hit an infield single as well as a line drive to center field.
The Cubs will travel to Colorado Springs tomorrow to begin a four-game set with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, Triple-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. CT at Security Service Field. The game can be heard live on AM 940, 104.5 FM, and live streamed at Iowacubs.com. The On-Deck Circle Pre-game Show will begin 6:40 p.m. CT.
