Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - The Storm Chasers (9-6) were left with a series split as the Memphis Redbirds (6-9) held off the late rallies by Omaha in a 8-7 defeat in the homestand finale. The two teams have split the last six four-game series at Werner Park dating back to the 2011 season.
Omaha and Memphis combined for 15 runs in the first four innings of the games, as the Redbirds put up four runs in both the second and the fourth off Chasers starter Clay Mortensen (his most runs allowed in an Omaha uniform). Whit Merrifield, Moises Sierra and Casey Kotchman all contributed to a six-run third inning, the most runs for Omaha in an inning this year, and they pulled to 8-7 on Sierra's third RBI of the game in the fourth. Sierra was thrown out trying to score the tying run later in that inning on a double by Cheslor Cuthbert.
In the seventh inning, the Storm Chasers had a golden opportunity to tie or take the lead as they loaded the bases with no outs. Lane Adams then hit a sharp grounder to third that resulted in a force out at home, leading to Kotchman and Francisco Pena striking out in consecutive at-bats. The ninth inning saw Omaha load the bases with three straight two-out walks, but Pena stranded three runners again with a strikeout to finish off the game. The Storm Chasers could not muster a hit in the final five innings.
Whit Merrifield extended his hitting streak to nine games with a base hit, the longest hitting streak so far this season. Moises Sierra's three RBI on two hits give him 10 runs driven in on the season, second most on the team, while he leads the Chasers with 22 hits on the year.
Omaha now heads out for an eight-game roadtrip, with stops at division foes Oklahoma City and Colorado Springs. RHP Aaron Brooks (0-2, 4.70 ERA) will attempt to keep Omaha from suffering consecutive losses for the first time this season as he faces off with Dodgers RHP Scott Baker (1-1, 1.06 ERA). First pitch on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and MiLB.TV is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
