Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers shut out Albuquerque 3-0 at Cheney Stadium on Thursday night behind 6.0 innings of one-hit ball from starting pitcher Mike Montgomery.
It was the first shutout for Tacoma since July 25, 2014, when they held Sacramento scoreless on just three hits in a 7-0 victory. The Rainiers last recorded a shutout against Albuquerque on May 11, 2012 behind 7.1 innings of one-hit ball from starter Andrew Carraway in a 4-0 victory.
Montgomery notched his second quality start of the year, striking out five and allowing just one hit - he is now 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA (1ERx12.0IP) in two starts against Albuquerque this season.
Joe Saunders tossed 2.0 innings in relief of Montgomery, allowing only two hits and striking out a pair. Mark Lowe tossed a perfect ninth inning, striking out the final two Isotopes batters on the way to earning his first save of the season.
Tacoma jumped on the scoreboard when outfielder Shawn O'Malley (1x3) singled in the third inning, allowing catcher John Hicks to score while caught in a rundown between first and second base.
Infielder Chris Taylor (2x4) provided the Rainiers with their first sixth-inning run of the year by swatting a leadoff home run to open the frame, pushing Tacoma's lead to 2-0.
Jesus Montero (2x4) drove in the Rainiers final run of the night with an eighth inning single, scoring Taylor from second and giving Tacoma a 3-0 cushion.
The Rainiers, looking for a series split with Albuquerque, will put right-hander Jordan Pries (0-1, 9.20) on the hill for the final game of the series tomorrow, April 24. The Isotopes will counter with right-hander Leuris Gomez (0-0, 6.35), who is making his first start of the year. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
