Buffalo Bisons News Release

Despite another strong outing from Bisons starting pitcher Shawn Morimando, the Rochester Red Wings got past the Buffalo bullpen, culminating in a 5-4 walk-off victory in 10 innings in the first game of the weekend series at Frontier Field in Rochester, NY.

Jake Cave brought home John Andreoli in the first pitch of his at-bat with a bases loaded single against Buddy Boshers for the Red Wings' second victory in extra innings this season.

Earlier in the night, the Bisons took the lead early against Red Wings pitcher Lewis Thorpe. After former Bison Jordany Valdespin scored on Nick Gordon's sacrifice fly in the third inning to give the Red Wings a 1-0 lead, the Bisons went to work, scoring three runs on three hits in the fourth. After Teoscar Hernández recorded his second single of the night, Patrick Kivlehan hit his first home run as a Bison that just went over the center field wall for a 2-1 lead.

This was followed by Richard Ureña's second home run in as many days for the Herd's 3-1 lead. The shortstop now has 16 RBI on the season.

Kivlehan, the first baseman who was promoted from New Hampshire (AA) earlier this month, went yard again in the sixth inning to become the first Bison to have a multi-home run night since Alen Hanson against Lehigh Valley on May 24, giving his new team a 4-1 lead.

Other than the sacrifice fly, it appeared that Morimando was the riding the momentum from his previous start in Lehigh Valley as three of his 7.1 innings were completed throwing 10 pitches and got out of trouble with multiple doubleplay groundouts.

But the Red Wings turned up the heat with their three-run, three-hit rally in the bottom of the eighth inning. Following Drew Maggi's tough 11-pitch duel with Morimando that ended in a walk, Andreoli sent a 3-2 pitch over the left-field wall for his 6th home run of the season, cutting the deficit to 4-3 and ending Morimando's night. In his no decision, Morimando allowed the three runs on four hits, struck out four batters and walked three on 103 pitches (68 strikes).

Reliever Kirby Snead unfortunately couldn't stop the bleeding. After Nick Gordon and LaMont Wade Jr. reached base on a walk and single respectively, Zander Wiel launched a RBI double off the centerfield wall to tie the game at 4.

Jordan Romano came into the game for Buffalo two batters later to get out of the jam and struck out another batter this season in the ninth inning before handing the ball off to Boshers for extras.

Even with the three home runs, the Bisons finished the night 0 of 6 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base. In the loss, Anthony Alford's seven-game hitting streak was ended as he finished the night with a pair of strikeouts.

In the victory, Thorpe threw six innings and allowed all of Buffalo's four runs on six hits but struck out five batters and only walked one. The bullpen of Andrew Vasquez, Jake Reed and DJ Baxendale (winning pitcher) allowed only one hit in four innings of work.

The two teams continue this round of the Thruway Cup with another 7:05 first pitch at Frontier Field. Conor Fisk looks for his second win of the season with the Herd and will deal against the Red Wings' Sean Poppen..
