Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Pawtucket broke open a scoreless game with five runs over the final three innings to post a 5-0 win over Indianapolis Monday evening at Victory Field.
The Red Sox improve to 26-30 on the season, while the Indians fall to 32-24 overall. Indianapolis continues to lead the International League's West Division by five games over Toledo, while Pawtucket trails Rochester by 8.5 games in the IL North.
Three Pawtucket pitchers -- LHP Jon Lester, RHP Mark Deschenes and LHP Craig Breslow -- contributed to the team's eighth shutout of the campaign. Lester (4.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 3 SO) started and took a no-decision. Deschenes (2.1 IP, 1 H) improved to 2-2 with the win, while Breslow (2.2 IP, 3 H, 4 SO) finished the contest to notch his fourth save of the campaign.
The Red Sox picked up their first run in the seventh when 1B Hee-Seop Choi walked, advanced to third on LF Jeff Bailey's single to right and crossed the dish on 3B Rodney Nye's RBI groundout.
Pawtucket added an insurance run in the eighth before plating three more in the ninth. RF Ron Calloway scored on CF David Murphy's single to center in the eighth, while Nye drove in a run and scored another in the ninth.
Indianapolis RHP Brandon Duckworth (7.1 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO) dropped his first decision since April 18, falling to 8-3 on the season. Duckworth still leads the International League with eight wins on the campaign.
Tribe LHP C.J. Nitkowski (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO) and RHP Marty McLeary (1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 SO) finished the game for the Indians, but neither factored in the decision.
SS Dustin Pedroia recorded three hits for the visitors, while Calloway and Bailey collected two apiece. 2B Taber Lee singled three times for the home team, while 1B Chris Richard reached base safely for a 21st consecutive game.
The two clubs return to Victory Field Tuesday night at 7 p.m., for game two of the four-game series. RHP Ron Chiavacci is scheduled to start for the Indians, while LHP Abe Alvarez is expected to get the nod for the Red Sox.
The game will be televised by WHMB-TV 40 with Howard Kellman and Jim Barbar. It will also be available on ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com as Scott McCauley and Greg Rakestraw have the call
