Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Red Wings defeated the Durham Bulls 5-4 in extra-innings Monday night at Frontier Field. Kevin West had the game winning hit, and Josh Rabe went 3-for-3 with two walks and three RBI to provide the offense for the Wings.
West's bases-loaded bottom of the 10th hit came off of Durham's J.B. Miadich, who had 22 walks in 25 innings pitched prior to tonight's game. Jason Tyner led off the inning with a walk and Jason Bartlett reached base on an infield single. After another walk to Rabe, West came to the plate and Miadich had no place to put him. West blooped a ball to shallow right field to score Tyner with the winning run.
Red Wings starter Scott Baker, in his first game since coming down from Minnesota, danced around trouble in the Durham first inning. He allowed a pair of hits to start the frame, but ended up striking out cleanup hitter Kevin Witt to get out of the inning. In the second, Baker yielded a pair of hits, including an RBI double by Brent Butler that gave the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
On the mound for Durham, rookie Brian Stokes was looking for a second straight strong start, after allowing five runs in each of his previous three starts between May 14 and May 19. Stokes breezed through the first three innings, with Shawn Wooten's double in the second the only Rochester hit.
Rochester got a lead-off double from Bartlett in the bottom of the fourth; for Bartlett, it was his league-leading 23rd double of the season, and extended his hitting streak to eight games. Rabe, batting a team-high .410 with runners in scoring position this season, smashed a 1-2 pitch from Stokes into right-center for a double that plated Bartlett and evened the score at 1-1. West singled and Wooten followed with a sacrifice fly to score Rabe and put Rochester up 2-1.
Durham came right back against Baker, scoring twice in the fifth to regain the lead 3-2. Rocco Baldelli and Elijah Dukes had back-to-back RBI doubles; with a runner at second and two outs, Baker struck out league home run and RBI leader Witt for the third time.
The Wings answered the Bulls with another run in the bottom of the fifth. Rabe singled in Andres Torres to tie the game at three.
Butler led off the top of the seventh for Durham with a walk. Kevin Cash bunted him to second and B.J. Upton drove him in with a single as Durham went ahead 4-3.
Bartlett led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch by reliever Jose Rodriguez. Rabe hit a 3-1 pitch up the middle to drive in Bartlett and tie the game 4-4. Rabe advanced to second on another wild pitch. With two outs Durham called in left handed pitcher Jeff Ridgeway from the bullpen to face Garrett Jones; Jones flied out to left to end the inning.
Ricky Barrett came in to retire the Durham batters 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth, and allowed just a single in the 10th to earn the win, boosting his record to 3-1. Baker pitched eight innings and allowed eight hits and four runs, with two walks and six strikeouts.
