Norfolk Tides News Release
June 5, 2006 - Norfolk plated five first inning runs en route to a 7-5 win over the Syracuse SkyChiefs Monday night, helping starter Evan MacLane improve his record to 5-0.
The Tides sent eight men to the plate in the five-run first, as the first five batters in the Norfolk order came around to score before Syracuse could record an out. Jose Offerman singled home Anderson Hernandez with the Tides' first run, and cleanup batter Michael Tucker then put the Tides up 3-0 with a two-run double down the right field line. Victor Diaz and Chase Lambin followed with back-to-back RBI singles, giving the Tides a 5-0 lead they would not relinquish.
The run support proved enough for MacLane, who worked around 11 hits in 5.2 innings of work to pick up his fifth win in six starts with the Tides. MacLane allowed five runs (three earned) and struck out four without issuing a walk, throwing 89 pitches, 59 for strikes. The 23-year-old southpaw is now 5-0 with a 2.35 ERA in six Triple-A starts after being promoted from Double-A Binghamton earlier this year, and leads all Mets' minor leaguers with eight wins in 2006.
Reliever Steve Schmoll retired all seven batters he faced to help preserve MacLane's victory, and Royce Ring worked around a leadoff walk in the 9th inning to earn his second save of the season.
Dustin McGowan, rated the top prospect in the Blue Jays organization by Baseball America, took the loss for Syracuse, allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits in 3.0 innings of work.
Chase Lambin had three hits to pace the Tides offense, as Norfolk snapped a season-long four-game losing streak. The Tides have now scored 46 runs in MacLane's six starts this season, an average of 7.7 a game.
The Tides and SkyChiefs will meet again Tuesday night, as the teams continue their four-game series. John Maine (1-3, 2.40) will make his second rehab start with Norfolk, and is set to square off against Syracuse right-hander Jamie Vermilyea (0-2, 2.86). It is turn-back-the-clock night at Harbor Park, as all Gwaltney hot dogs, Coke's and popcorn are just 25 cents. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m.
