Charlotte outhits Richmond and still loses 2-1

June 5, 2006 - International League (IL1)
Charlotte Knights News Release

Charlotte managed to out hit Richmond seven to four, however all seven hits were singles and the Knights left eight runners on-base as the Braves squeaked out a 2-1 victory Monday evening at Knights Stadium.

The Braves struck first, scoring one run in the third before Richmond left fielder Scott Thorman blasted a solo home run to the deepest part of center field in the fifth to extend the lead to 2-0.

The Knights lone run came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Three consecutive singles by Ernie Young, Ryan Sweeney and Pedro Lopez loaded the bases and after Tony Torcato was set down on strikes Chris Stewart lifted a ball deep enough into right scoring Young. This would be the only time a Knight would cross home plate all evening.

The Braves would not need to muster anymore offense as right-handed starter Lance Cormier pitched five solid innings giving up just one run off five hits while striking out two batters. This was Cormier's first win as a Richmond Brave. It was Wayne Franklin and Manny Acosta who came in and pitched two innings apiece to close out the 2-1 win.

Charlotte errors proved costly as usual sure handed third baseman Josh Fields had to make a tough play on a sharply hit ground ball that was later ruled an error which led to the winning run for the Braves.

Game two of the four game series is scheduled for Tuesday evening with a 7:15 first pitch time.
