Red Deer Tames Hitmen 3-2

Calgary, AB - It was an intense battle between the Calgary Hitmen and Red Deer Rebels Sunday afternoon. In a close match, the Hitmen were defeated 3-2.

The Hitmen got on the scoreboard first with a goal from Zac Funk, his second of the year, with helpers from Jackson van de Leest and Riley Fiddler-Schultz. Things got heated near the end of the period with Matthew Sutter and Jace Isely taking majors for fighting. It remained a one goal game through the first twenty minutes.

The Rebels were the next to find the back of the net at 14:32 into the second period, capitalizing on a power play with a goal from Ben King. Despite multiple penalties from both sides, it remained a tie game after the second period.

Five minutes into the third period, Arshdeep Bains scored his fifth of the year on the power play to give the Rebels a one goal lead. A shot from Adam Kydd cause the goal horn to sound but the goal was waived off and the Rebels went the other way. Jhett Larson beat Brayden Peters to make the score 3-1. Kydd's play went under review but the call on the ice stood as no goal.

In an effort to mount a comeback, Riley Fiddler-Schultz buried one on the power play making the score 3-2 at 15:20 into the third. With 11 seconds left, an empty net and an offensive zone faceoff, the Hitmen gave one last push to tie the game, but came up short.

Maxim Muranov hailing from Russia and Anton Astashevich from Belarus, made their WHL debuts after arriving in Canada last Monday.

Brayden Peters received the second star of the game. Peters reached 1,500 career saves in today's match.

The Hitmen are idle until Friday, Nov.5 when they open a home-and-home set with the Edmonton Oil Kings at Scotiabank Saddledome. Game time is 7:00 p.m. The return match will be played in the provincial capital the next day on Saturday, Nov. 6. The visit to Edmonton will mark the start of three straight on the road for Calgary with additional stops in Swift Current (Nov. 12) and Medicine Hat (Nov. 13) before once again hosting Red Deer on Friday, Nov. 19.
