REGINA, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos (2-7-1-1) and Regina Pats (4-7-0-0) combined for six goals on special teams Saturday night, with the Pats scoring twice while shorthanded in the second period as they won 7-3.
Isaac Poulter made a number of big stops in the first period to keep the game scoreless, robbing Connor Bedard twice and Logan Nijhoff once before the Pats opened the scoring.
After Tom Cadieux pinched from the right point to keep the puck in, it came to Bedard in the right circle and he fired a low shot past the blocker of Poulter to open the scoring with 4:50 to go in the period.
The Broncos then received a 5-on-3 power play after Easton Armstrong was called for boarding and Drew Englot for playing the puck without his helmet just 30 seconds apart.
Owen Pickering finished off a cross-crease pass from Raphael Pelletier to tie the game at one with 1:20 left in the first period.
Swift Current had an early power play in the second, but it was the Pats taking advantage first. Rayan Bettahar was skating back into his own zone to pick up the loose puck, but hit a rut in the ice and fell, allowing Nijhoff to skate in and score shorthanded to put Regina ahead 2-1.
The Broncos responded quickly by scoring on the same power play as Mathew Ward threw the puck to the net and Cole Nagy jammed the rebound through the five hole of Matthew Kieper to tie the game at two.
Four minutes later the Pats scored again while shorthanded, this time after a turnover in the neutral zone which ended with Tanner Howe scoring on a breakaway to restore Regina's lead.
Josh Filmon had a pair of breakways in the period, but was denied by Kieper on both opportunities to keep the Pats ahead.
Regina then added to their lead by scoring in the final minute of the period while on the power play as Bedard's shot from the right circle hit the cuff of Poulter's glove and went in to put the Pats ahead 4-2 after two.
Ryker Evans extended the lead 2:44 into the third period, cutting to the slot and scoring his second goal of the year to make it 5-2 before Bedard and Cole Dubinsky scored five minutes apart to make it 7-2.
Pelletier scored on a power play late in the game as the Broncos went 3-for-7 on the power play in the game, but fell 7-3.
Swift Current heads to Saskatoon to play the Blades on Wednesday for their next game before beginning a six-game home stand next Friday against the Medicine Hat Tigers.
