RECAP -- Stars Earn One Point in 4-3 Shootout Loss

OMAHA, Neb. - The Lincoln Stars (12-14-0-1) scored late in the third period to force a shootout but fell 4-3 to the Omaha Lancers (18-8-2-0) on Saturday night at Ralston Arena.

For the second-straight night, the Stars scored the opening goal coming at 9:05 of the first period when forward Dominick Mersch deflected a shot from forward Casey Dornbach to take the 1-0 lead. An answer from the Lancers came at 16:59 to tie the game, 1-1, on the power play from forward Mick Kohler. The Stars pushed back ahead, 2-1, when Dornbach tapped in a shot from the left post.

The Lancers scored twice on special teams in the second period to take over the lead. At 6:12, forward Filip Suchy scored on a shorthanded rush, and forward Cole Gallant tallied a one-time shot on the power play at 17:31 to take the 3-2 lead.

With the netminder pulled, Stars forward Collin Peters ripped a shot from the slot at 18:18 to tie the game at 3-3 and force both teams to overtime. After a scoreless five minutes and first three rounds of the shootout, Lancers forward Cole Gallant scored the winner in the fourth round to take the 4-3 win.

Lancers goaltender Vinnie Purpura (7-1-1) stopped 30 of 33 shots in the win, while Stars netminder Derek Schaedig (5-2-1) turned away 27 of 30 shots in the shootout loss. The Stars return to the Ice Box on Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 7:05 p.m. to host the Des Moines Buccaneers.
