Lincoln Stars News Release

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Lincoln Stars (3-0-0) remained perfect thanks to early and consistent scoring during their 6-2 win over the Des Moines Buccaneers (1-3-0) on Saturday night at Buccaneer Arena.

The Stars took notes from last night's game and surged ahead early with the opening goal on the first shift. At just 0:43, a shot from Devlin McCabe bounced off the glove of the Bucs netminder, and forward Gustaf Westlund tapped in the loose rebound for consecutive games with goals and a 1-0 lead. Less than three minutes later at 3:13, Stars forward Hunter Johannes found center Tristan Ashbrook parked in front of the Des Moines net for an open one-time shot and a 2-0 lead.

The second period became deja vu for the Stars and Buccaneers with similar shot totals, power play opportunities, and scoring. The Stars once again added to their lead when forward Casey Dornbach fired a hard wrist shot just under the crossbar at 8:39 while 4-on-4 to triple the lead, 3-0. The Stars moved to a 4-0 advantage at 11:22 when captain Dominick Mersch beat the Bucs netminder through the legs on a breakaway.

The Buccaneers finally broke through at 1:48 of the third period when Sam Hentges worked a breakaway tally to cut into the lead, 4-1. Stars forward Casey Dornbach didn't delay in grabbing his third-career multi-goal game at 4:44 thanks to a one-time shot in front of the net to jump back to a four-goal lead, 5-1. The Stars power play also had a breakthrough with their first tally of the season with a shot from McCabe to stretch the lead to its largest of the night, 6-1. The Buccaneers added one more on the power play from Scooter Brickey at 14:13, but the Stars cruised to a 6-2 victory to round out the home-and-home set.

Stars goaltender Tomáœ=A1 Vomá=C4=8Dka (3-0-0) earned the win, stopping 32 of 34 shots, while Buccaneers netminder Jake Kucharski (1-1-0) picked up the loss, turning aside 27 of 33 shots. The Stars continue their four-game road stretch on Friday, Oct. 20 at 7:05 p.m. when they take on the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders from Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. Coverage begins 13 minutes prior to faceoff on 93.7 The Ticket, HockeyTV and Lincoln Stars Radio.
