October 14, 2017 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Youngstown Phantoms News Release
FARGO, ND - Grant Hebert's goal at 2:59 of overtime combined with 29 saves from Ryan Bischel to give the Fargo Force a 3-2 win over the Youngstown Phantoms (0-2-1-0, 1 point) on Friday night at Scheels Arena.
"Not happy to come out of that game with one point," said Phantoms Head Coach Brad Patterson. "I liked the compete in the guys and I told them it's just a matter of time before we start getting those results."
Fargo got out to a 1-0 lead near the halfway mark of the first period. Spencer Meier redirected a point shot off the skate of a Phantoms' defender and past Ivan Prosvetov (37 saves) to give the Force the early advantage.
Youngstown scored twice in the second period to jump in front. Matthew Barry fired home a sharp-angle shot at 6:25 for his first USHL goal, and Matthew Thomson blasted a one-timer into the top corner to give the Phantoms a 2-1 lead at 13:13. Thomson's goal was scored on the power play and was also his first in the USHL. Barry's goal came four seconds after a power play ended for Youngstown. On the night, the Phantoms' special team units were 1-for-6 on the power play and 6-for-6 on the penalty kill. "I thought (the special teams units) did good," said Patterson. "The guys continue to mature and get better in those areas and I like the possibility of what we have to do there."
Fargo tied the game 4:11 into the third period when Hebert stole a pass behind the net and found a crashing Logan Jenuwine who finished the play by beating Prosvetov upstairs to knot things up at 2. Fargo got a late power play, but the Phantoms were able to kill it off and the game went to overtime. In the extra frame, the Force won an offensive zone draw and were able to create a 2-on-1 down low. With Hebert skating from right to left, he elevated the puck over the outstretched right leg of Prosvetov for the game winner.
Youngstown and Fargo wrap up their season series tomorrow night at Scheels Arena with puck drop scheduled for 8:05pm Eastern time. A broadcast of the game will be available on HockeyTV.
